I am delighted to announce that Dr. Thomas Gallagher, Professor of Medicine and Bioethics & Humanities, has been appointed the first Director of the Program in Hospital Medicine within the Division of General Internal Medicine. This is a newly created position that is jointly supported by UW and Harborview Medical Centers to provide leadership for the rapidly expanding hospital medicine programs throughout UW Medicine. Dr. Gallagher was selected following an intensive national search.
Dr. Gallagher has a national reputation for his research related to quality and safety, particularly in the area of disclosing medical errors to patients. He has published over 70 articles in peer-reviewed journals such as JAMA, New England Journal of Medicine and Annals of Internal Medicine plus numerous book chapters and other publications. His work has been supported by numerous grants from NIH, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Greenwall Foundation.
In addition to oversight of the patient care activities of the hospitalist programs at each medical center, he will develop innovative research related to inpatient care of surgical and medical patients. These studies are anticipated to address important clinical topics and problems related to health care delivery and may include, for example, evaluations of interventions designed to improve quality or efficiency of care provided to hospitalized patients and studies of methods to prevent or treat common medical complications. Dr. Gallagher will also oversee the implementation of a Hospital Medicine Faculty Development Initiative. Many of these efforts will be closely aligned with related programs conducted under the auspices of the recently established UW Medicine Center for Scholarship in Patient Care Quality and Safety that is also directed by Dr. Gallagher.
