Robert and Lynn Brunton’s Story:
Financing Medical School
Until he took a biology class at Whitman College, Robert Brunton was planning to become an attorney. That class — led by a professor familiar with the UW School of Medicine — changed his life. Dr. Brunton went on to become a medical student at the University of Washington, met his future wife (Lynn, then majoring in dental hygiene), and graduated in 1961.
“The University of Washington really had some first-class professors,” he says. “They imparted their sense of medicine and also their sense of humanity.”
After they graduated, the Bruntons moved to Los Angeles, then to Phoenix, then finally to Olympia, Wash., where they opened a private practice in ophthalmology. Despite their travels, the Bruntons never forgot their teachers or their connection to their alma mater — in fact, they were inspired to make gifts to a number of departments at the University of Washington.
The couple’s most recent gift, made through their IRA, was directed toward an endowed scholarship fund set up by Dr. Brunton’s graduating class. Dr. and Mrs. Brunton had learned how expensive medical school had become for today’s students, and they wanted to help.
“It was important to us to lighten the load for medical students,” says Dr. Brunton. What’s more, the charitable IRA rollover program provided a convenient way to give. “It just makes a lot of financial sense to donate charitably, tax-free,” he says.
Moved by students’ stories, encouraged by the IRA rollover provision — ultimately, the Bruntons also believe in investing in their communities. Especially the good work done by the University of Washington.
“Both of us really appreciated the education we got from the UW, and giving back is one way to show appreciation,” says Dr. Brunton.
