{"id":959,"date":"2023-06-15T10:59:02","date_gmt":"2023-06-15T17:59:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/globalhealthjustice\/?p=959"},"modified":"2023-06-15T10:59:02","modified_gmt":"2023-06-15T17:59:02","slug":"worlds-deadliest-wars-go-unreported","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/globalhealthjustice\/worlds-deadliest-wars-go-unreported\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;World&#8217;s Deadliest Wars Go Unreported&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Anjan Sundaram, Indian Journalist, interviewed on Democracy Now! on 8\u00a0 June 2023,\u00a0 says that the &#8216;colonial structure of global media&#8217; under-reports some of the biggest wars in our world today.\u00a0 He notes that despite technological advances in information access and technology, &#8220;conflicts like the one on the Central African Republic are still shrouded in darkness, and we often don&#8217;t know the perpetrators, who is attacked, or why.&#8221; It is striking that the press has &#8220;enormous blind spots in places like the Central African Republic (CAR) or the Democratic Republic of Congo, where nearly 6 million people have died since \u2014 been killed in the war since 1996.&#8221; He discusses how French colonialism in CAR repressed the Muslim populations, who made a bid for power in 2013. The government response, aided by the notorious Wagner Goup, has been brutal, with &#8220;ethnic cleansing&#8221; of the Muslims, reducing their population in the country by nearly half.
