th<\/sup>, 2024.<\/p>\nThe symposium was titled: \u201cPreliminary results from The Enterics for Global Health (EFGH) Shigella surveillance study- preparing for Shigella vaccine trials in the target population of young children living in low- and middle-income countries<\/em>\u201d and aimed to:<\/p>\n\n- Sensitize the audience to the rationale for the EFGH study and need for Shigella <\/em>vaccines in the target population of young children living in low- and middle-income countries,<\/li>\n
- Equip participants with recent data directly applicable to optimally designing Shigella <\/em>vaccine trials, and<\/li>\n
- Outline key short- and long-term consequences of Shigella <\/em>diarrhea and identify outstanding data that will be critical to policy maker decision-making around eventual adoption of a Shigella <\/em>vaccine.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
Representatives from each of the 7 implementing sites (Bangladesh, Pakistan, Peru, Malawi, Kenya, The Gambia, and Mali) presented preliminary results from the EFGH study including serotype-specific Shigella<\/em> incidence rates, antimicrobial resistance burden among Shigella<\/em> isolates collected in EFGH, and estimated costs of Shigella<\/em> diarrhea.<\/p>\nThe symposium was co-Chaired by Dr. Firdausi Qadri of icddr,b and Dr. Patricia Pavlinac, Assistant Professor in the Department of Global Health and Global WACh Co-Director.<\/p>\n
