Postdoctoral Fellow, Geospatial Core Code

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation and the Department of Health Metrics Sciences within the School of Medicine at the University of Washington are recruiting to fill up to one full-time year-long postdoctoral fellow appointment.

About IHME

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is an independent research center at the University of Washington. Its mission is to monitor global health conditions and health systems, as well as to evaluate interventions, initiatives, and reforms. It uses cutting-edge techniques to tackle some of the most difficult and most critical questions in global health and find answers that will become the foundation for better policies and, ultimately, better health.

Scope of Fellowship

The incumbent will use model-based geostatistics (MBG) among other innovative analytical methods and devise ways to carry them out more easily and routinely. By enhancing existing computational pipelines and writing novel computational solutions, this position helps resolve challenges to enable the timely and efficient production of high-caliber scientific and policy-relevant results. The solutions developed must allow databases and analytic engines to function seamlessly with one another. The individual will also be responsible for contributing to papers, presentations, and other materials to help disseminate results. Candidates possessing specific interests in niche models, species distribution models, statistical inference, stochastic processes or infectious disease modeling are strongly encouraged to apply. This position is contingent on project funding availability.

Postdoctoral Fellows play a critical role in ongoing research projects that apply analytical approaches and quantitative methods to impact evaluations, health economics, Global Burden of Disease, and other projects within the health metrics field. Duties of each fellow are tailored to create a research experience that builds upon the core proficiencies from their doctoral training.

Fellows work within teams to drive research forward from inception to publication while acquiring analytical skills and exploring new areas of investigation. Along with research opportunities, IHME provides training workshops to broaden fellows’ experience in effective writing for publication, grants, and statistical software programs.

The fellowship program also encourages fellows to engage in meaningful dialogue with the academic and policy communities by presenting research findings at global health conferences and participating in key meetings. This program focuses on defining research and professional development goals for future positons in academia, national health agencies, international organizations, and foundations.

Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience. This is a one-year appointment renewed annually following a performance review.

The University of Washington and the International Union, Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America, Local 4121 (UAW 4121) currently are negotiating their first collective bargaining agreement for Postdoctoral Scholars. The successful applicants will have a doctoral research degree (or foreign equivalent) in statistics, mathematics, computer science, engineering, public health, or other relevant subject. The successful applicant will have a proven record of quantitative research and analytical skills along with advanced research experience in data analysis and/or statistical methods.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Linux and cluster computing environments.
  • Practical experience in one or more of the following: statistical inference, stochastic processes, space-time mathematical models, or infectious disease modeling.
  • Experience contributing to a collaborative software project and working with a version control system (git, svn, etc).
  • Experience with survey data and administrative data from health facilities.
  • Experience in handling spatial data.
  • Expertise in additional programming languages or mathematical software packages.
