Advice from the Selection Committee

Each year, potentially strong Student Leader applicants are cut from the selection process because of poorly written materials on the application. Do not underestimate the importance of the written statements. The following is a list of steps that you can take to potentially be more successful in the selection process.

Application Advice to Student Leader Candidates

  • Make sure you understand what the question is asking.
  • Provide thoughtful and thorough responses.
  • Answer the questions thoroughly. Every question has multiple components, so make sure that you answer every component of the question.
  • Learn more about the Student Leader positions. Attend a required information session, talk to current Student Leaders (RAs/REPs/RPBs), and/or talk to a Resident Director, Associate Hall Director or Area Director.
  • Use proper grammar, spelling, punctuation and syntax. Candidates are evaluated on their writing skills.
  • Written Statements and interviews are reviewed separately from any demographic information. Regardless of your involvement in and contributions to the residential communities thus far, your application materials must be strong on their own.
  • Take your written materials to the UW CLUE Writing Center before you submit it online.
