Time to gear up for FLAS

The Foreign Language & Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS) is one of a history student's best friends. Information sessions are beginning shortly--don't miss out!

FLAS fellowships provide a stipend and cover your tuition for either an entire academic year of language and area study, or an intensive summer language program.

The award amounts are as follows:

Academic Year Graduate: $18,000 tuition, $15,000 living stipend 
Summer Graduate/Undergraduate: $5,000 tuition, $2,500 living stipend

Fulbright-Hays Dissertation Research Abroad

The Fiscal Year 2015 competition for the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Program (DDRA) was announced in the Federal Register on February 27, 2015. The due date for submitting applications is April 28, 2015.

The DDRA Program provides grants to colleges and universities to fund individual doctoral students who conduct research in other countries, in modern foreign languages and area studies for periods of six to 12 months.

UPenn Summer Institute on Inequality - Deadline April 15

The third Summer Institute for Predissertation Students to be held from May 26 through June 3, 2015 at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The program will provide opportunities for talented doctoral students in the social sciences to visit the University of Pennsylvania campus to explore research topics and scholarship related to the theme of Inequality.

Fellowship: Jewish Studies Graduate Program

The Stroum Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Washington is now accepting applications for supplemental graduate fellowships for the 2015-2016 academic year. Any graduate student planning to be enrolled at the University of Washington for the 2015-2016 academic year is eligible to apply, as long as they can demonstrate a connection between their research and Jewish Studies topics. The amount per fellowship will be $3000. Multiple fellowships are available. Support may also be available for conference travel related to students’ research projects.

With ongoing budget cuts at public universities and a still-disastrous job market, funding for graduate and postdoctoral research is more important than ever.  Many grad students know that finding dissertation fellowships and postdocs can be a catch-as-catch-can experience, with no place where knowledge about different funding sources is really centralized.  To help ease the pain, Tropics of Meta put together this handy list of funding sources for historical research:

ACLS Postdoc Fellowships - Deadline March 17

ACLS has opened its fifth annual Public Fellows competition. In 2015, the program will place 22 recent humanities PhDs in two-year positions at partnering nonprofits and government agencies, where the fellows will participate in the core work of these organizations while benefitting from professional mentoring and career development opportunities. Fellows receive a stipend of $65,000 per year, as well as individual health insurance and additional funds toward professional development.

IIE Confucius China Studies Program Joint PhD Research Fellowship (due Jan 29, 2015)


The Confucius China Studies Program Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship provides generous funding and support for qualified students who wish to pursue doctoral research in China. Funding awards range from six months to two years. Students from a wide range of academic areas focusing on China are encouraged to apply.
