6:30 pm: NHS Presents: Using Native Plants in the Garden with Linda Cochran

Cost: $12/members, /$20 non-members. Register online. Linda will talk about how to use various native plant communities to create native plant gardens suitable for different scenarios. She will describe where these plants can be purchased, how to grow them from seed, and how to utilize self-seeding natives. She'll also discuss maintenance techniques. Linda Cochran is a long-time PNW gardener who has focused extensively on native plants over the last 10-15 years.  Recording will be available for 4 weeks. 6:30 pm: NHS Presents: Gravel Gardens: Gardens for our Changing Climate with Jeff Epping

Cost: free/members, /$20 non-members. Register online. Jeff will show you how to replace all or some of your lawn with an easy-to-maintain eco-friendly gravel garden. Gravel gardens require little water, no fertilizer or other chemicals, no organic mulches & require less time & money to maintain. This garden system utilizes drought tolerant perennials, most of which are natives that support native fauna. Jeff Epping holds a bachelor’s & master’s degree in Ornamental Horticulture. He started Epping Design & Consulting in 2009 & recently retired after 28 years serving as Director of Horticulture at Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Madison, Wisconsin. We will take a look at a handful of plants propagated from seed & spore at the Elisabeth Miller Botanical Garden & investigate what methods work best & why. We will also look at cuttings & you should come away with ideas of how to improve a home propagation set up as well as how to collect seed & spore. Del Brummet has a focus on seed propagation research. He works as the head gardener at Elisabeth Miller Botanical Garden still collecting seeds & growing plants from cuttings. The pressure of being in the spotlight, finite resources, & a changing climate all contribute to making gardening more challenging than ever. In this talk, Dave Demers will share some of his experiences as a designer, gardener, & former City elected official. Demers moved to the West Coast to work at Heronswood & eventually settled in Vancouver, BC, where he runs a design/build/maintenance landscape firm, as well as a small specialty plant nursery.
