{"id":16606,"date":"2025-07-29T10:12:40","date_gmt":"2025-07-29T17:12:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/?post_type=book&#038;p=16606"},"modified":"2025-07-29T10:12:40","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T17:12:40","slug":"directions-for-the-gardiner-and-other-horticultural-advice","status":"publish","type":"book","link":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/book\/directions-for-the-gardiner-and-other-horticultural-advice\/","title":{"rendered":"Directions for the Gardiner and other Horticultural Advice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>John Evelyn (1620-1706) is best known as a diarist; his memoir dated from when he was student until his death over 65 years later.\u00a0 It gives insights to tumultuous 17th century England, especially the civil war, during which he traveled abroad to avoid being involved.<\/p>\n<p>Upon his return, Evelyn wrote extensively about forestry in Britain, in a part as an encouragement to landowners to plant trees for<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16579 wp-img alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/1903919479.01.MZZZZZZZ.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"153\" height=\"202\" \/> reforestation.\u00a0 In \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/hortlib.kohacatalog.com\/cgi-bin\/koha\/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=10852\">A Passion for Trees<\/a>,\u201d Maggie Campbell-Culver provides a biography of Evelyn and descriptions of 30 selected trees, liberally incorporating Evelyn\u2019s observations of these species.<\/p>\n<p>Gardening became a passion of Evelyn.\u00a0 He had his own copy of John Parkinson\u2019s book, which he studied frequently, adding his own notes.\u00a0 He developed a 100-acre garden just south of London, planted with 247 fruit trees including cherries, apples, and pears.\u00a0 He was also fond of gooseberries, currants, and roses.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16580 wp-img alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/0199232075.01.MZZZZZZZ.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"159\" height=\"242\" \/>He had hoped to complete an extensive and comprehensive book on gardening, but only small portions were published during his life.\u00a0 Two of these can be found in \u201cDirections for the Gardiner and other Horticultural Advice,\u201d edited by Maggie Campbell-Culver.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKalendarium Hortense\u201d is a monthly list of tasks in the orchard, the olitory (or kitchen garden), and in the parterre and flower garden.\u00a0 Advice for January includes \u201cIn over-wet, or hard weather, cleanse, mend, sharpen and prepare garden tools.\u201d\u00a0 Each month highlights the fruits and flowers in their prime, and those \u201cyet lasting\u201d from previous months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAcetaria: A Discourse of Sallets\u201d systematically lists all the appropriate vegetables (Evelyn was a vegetarian) to include in a salad, starting with lettuce \u2013 \u201cthe principal foundation of the universal tribe of salads; which is to cool and refresh.\u201d\u00a0 It is important that all \u201cyour herby ingredients be exquisitely culled and cleansed of all worm-eaten, slimy, cankered, dry, spotted or any ways vitiated leaves.\u201d\u00a0 Good advice indeed!<\/p>\n<p>Reviewed by: Brian Thompson on February 23, 2024<\/p>\n<p>Excerpted from the Spring 2024 issue of the <em>Arboretum Bulletin<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>John Evelyn (1620-1706) is best known as a diarist; his memoir dated from when he was student until his death over 65 years later.\u00a0 It gives insights to tumultuous 17th century England, especially the civil war, during which he traveled abroad to avoid being involved.
