Miller Library staff.\u00a0 Rebecca retired at the end of June 2025, but before she went, I asked about her favorite books in the Miller Library collection.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16740 wp-img alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/0805243518.01.MZZZZZZZ.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"163\" height=\"219\" \/>I was not surprised that the list of books \u201cthat have made a lasting impression\u201d she provided was extensive and quite varied.\u00a0 Many are in her personal collection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy Wild Garden: Notes from a Writer\u2019s Eden\u201d is by a favorite and prolific Israeli writer, Meir Shalev, who Rebecca heard speak at the University of Washington years ago.\u00a0 She particularly likes his ability to infuse his fiction with \u201ca depth of knowledge of Jewish texts and history\u201d along with a \u201cwry sense of humor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This book is a collection of vignettes about gardening in the north of Israel and includes chapters on cyclamen, anemones, and other familiar plants to gardeners in our region.\u00a0 Translated into English by Joanna Chen, this book is delightfully illustrated by Refaella Shir.<\/p>\n<p>Reviewed by: Brian Thompson on May 23, 2025<\/p>\n<p>Excerpted from the Summer 2025 issue of the <em>Arboretum Bulletin<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For 20 years, Rebecca Alexander was a mainstay of the Elisabeth C.
