Miller Library staff.\u00a0 Rebecca retired at the end of June 2025, but before she went, I asked about her favorite books in the Miller Library collection.\u00a0 I was not surprised that the list of books \u201cthat have made <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16755 wp-img alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/0226826791.01.MZZZZZZZ.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"145\" height=\"205\" \/>a lasting impression\u201d she provided was extensive and quite varied.\u00a0 Many are in her personal collection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBotanical Icons: Critical Practices of Illustration in the Premodern Mediterranean by Andrew Griebeler is a deep dive into the early history of botanical illustration.\u00a0 Rebecca especially enjoyed its \u201cfocus on a part of the world whose plants and manuscript illuminations particularly interest me.\u201d\u00a0 While this book tackles a complex history, the writing is very clear and well summarized at end of each chapter.\u00a0 Best are the wonderfully reproduced illustrations that mostly predate the printing press.<\/p>\n<p>Reviewed by: Brian Thompson on May 23, 2025<\/p>\n<p>Excerpted from the Summer 2025 issue of the <em>Arboretum Bulletin<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For 20 years, Rebecca Alexander was a mainstay of the Elisabeth C.
