{"id":16766,"date":"2025-08-13T09:51:46","date_gmt":"2025-08-13T16:51:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/?post_type=book&#038;p=16766"},"modified":"2025-08-13T10:04:18","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T17:04:18","slug":"the-plant-review","status":"publish","type":"book","link":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/book\/the-plant-review\/","title":{"rendered":"The Plant Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Miller Library has nearly 200 active subscriptions to magazines, journals, newsletters, and other periodical publications.\u00a0 I\u2019d love to read them all, but time constraints force me to be selective.\u00a0 One that I never miss is \u201cThe Plant Review,\u201d published quarterly by the Royal Horticultural Society of Britain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBizarre, brilliant and beautiful plants that grow in gardens\u201d is an accurate description of the magazine\u2019s focus, as proclaimed on its website.\u00a0 Typical articles promote little known but garden-worthy selections or species of trees, shrubs, and all types of herbaceous plants in meticulous detail \u2013 a plant nerd\u2019s delight!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16763 wp-img alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/20250813092717209_0001-372x528.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"235\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/20250813092717209_0001-372x528.jpg 372w, https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/20250813092717209_0001-581x825.jpg 581w, https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/20250813092717209_0001-768x1091.jpg 768w, https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/20250813092717209_0001-1081x1536.jpg 1081w, https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/20250813092717209_0001-1442x2048.jpg 1442w, https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/20250813092717209_0001-375x533.jpg 375w, https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/20250813092717209_0001-1200x1705.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/20250813092717209_0001-scaled.jpg 1802w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 235px) 100vw, 235px\" \/>For example, the June 2023 issue included an article titled \u201cThe Irises of Benton End,\u201d describing the hybridizing efforts of artist Cedric Morris (1889-1982) at his home in eastern England.\u00a0 Written by Sarah Cook, who maintains the largest collection of Morris\u2019 hybrids, the article includes photographs of all the 28 known survivors, along with the derivations of their names, including of friends, favorite places, and resident cats.<\/p>\n<p>Another article, spread over four pages with several photographs, sorts out the difference between two maple cultivars, <em>Acer<\/em> \u2018Silver Cardinal\u2019 and <em>A<\/em>. \u2018Red Flamingo.\u2019\u00a0 What are those differences?\u00a0 I don\u2019t have the space to summarize, but this is typical of the horticultural conundrums addressed by \u201cThe Plant Review.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the March 2022 issues, Dan Hinkley shares the highlight of his three decades of exploration of the genus <em>Begonia<\/em>, especially searching for those hardy in temperate gardens.\u00a0 In the same issue, Graham Rice critiques various wildflower websites, while Helen Harrison searches for large examples of Monkey Puzzle trees (<em>Araucaria araucana<\/em>) in Wales.<\/p>\n<p>While there is some overlap with \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/hortlib.kohacatalog.com\/cgi-bin\/koha\/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=14086\">The Garden<\/a>,\u201d also published by the RHS, \u201cThe Plant Review\u201d tackles the more obscure and esoteric subjects.\u00a0 It rarely features gardens, or the cultural and design practices found in its older, sibling publication.<\/p>\n<p>Begun as \u201cThe Plantsman\u201d in 1979, the Miller Library has a full run of this engaging magazine.
