{"id":6295,"date":"2023-02-16T14:42:52","date_gmt":"2023-02-16T22:42:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/?post_type=book&#038;p=6295"},"modified":"2024-02-09T11:53:42","modified_gmt":"2024-02-09T19:53:42","slug":"colchicum-the-complete-guide","status":"publish","type":"book","link":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/book\/colchicum-the-complete-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"Colchicum: The Complete Guide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6296\" src=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/CGW.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"337\" height=\"422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/CGW.jpg 399w, https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/CGW-375x470.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 337px) 100vw, 337px\" \/>The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has recently been producing excellent single genus books.\u00a0 Known historically as botanical monographs, the works of the past twenty years give equal importance to horticulture.\u00a0 While the many species are considered for their habitats and qualities, so are the many selected varieties or developed cultivars that are important to gardeners.\u00a0 Illustrations are much more prominent than in older books, and include paintings by botanical artists, contemporary and historical, and excellent photography.<\/p>\n<p>An example is \u201cColchicum: The Complete Guide,\u201d by Christopher Grey-Wilson and Robert Rolfe, that delves into a genus of great diversity with over 100 species and an extensive list of hybrids and cultivars.\u00a0 Each is stunningly shown with close-up photographs, while the text sorts out the nomenclature for the enthusiast.\u00a0 At over 500 pages, it is helpful for the average gardener to pick out a few key recommendations by the authors.<\/p>\n<p><em>Colchicum speciosum<\/em> \u2018Album\u2019 is \u201cwithout question the finest white autumn crocus grown in gardens.\u201d\u00a0 \u2018Autumn Queen\u2019 is the top choice for early-flowering and displays tessellation (a checkboard pattern on the petals), while \u2018Giant\u2019 is \u201cextremely vigorous in the garden and quick to multiply.\u201d\u00a0 Finally, the double \u2018Waterlily\u2019 \u201cis one of the most distinctive and eagerly sought garden cultivars.\u201d\u00a0 Having grown all of these, I agree with these assessments.<\/p>\n<p>Excerpted from Brian Thompson&#8217;s article in the Spring 2023 issue of the <em>Arboretum Bulletin<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has recently been producing excellent single genus books.\u00a0 Known historically as botanical monographs, the works of the past twenty years give equal importance to horticulture.\u00a0 While the many species are considered for their habitats and qualities, so are the many selected varieties or developed cultivars that are important to gardeners.\u00a0 Illustrations are much more prominent than in older books, and include paintings by botanical artists, contemporary and historical, and excellent photography.
