Somewhere on the internet, there is a rumor that cave paintings of cyclamen exist, but I have yet to find proof of that. It was Latinized from Greek kykl\u0101\u0301m\u012bnos, and that word has ancient origins in the Greek for circle\u2014probably because of the plant\u2019s round tuber. The plant was introduced to cultivation in Western Europe from its native eastern Mediterranean region. There is supposedly a sculpted cyclamen in a house in Pompeii, but it is hard to recognize any of the plant\u2019s \u00a0distinctive characteristics.<\/p>\n<p>There are pre-Linnaean descriptions of the plant from the time of Greek philosopher Theophrastus (3<sup>rd<\/sup> century B.C.E.), and illustrations of it appear in various translations of the <em>Treatise of Plants<\/em> by Greek physician Dioscorides (who lived in 1<sup>st<\/sup> century C.E.).<\/p>\n<p>English herbalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exclassics.com\/herbal\/herbalv30137.htm\">John Gerard<\/a> wrote about it in 1597: \u201cSow-Bread is called in Greek\u00a0<em>Kyklaminos<\/em>: in Latin,\u00a0<em>Tuber terr\u00e6<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Terr\u00e6 rapum<\/em>: of Marcellus,\u00a0<em>Orbicularis<\/em>: of Apuleius,\u00a0<em>Palalia, Rapum porcinum<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Terr\u00e6 malum<\/em>: in shops,\u00a0<em>Cyclamen, Panis porcinus<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Arthanita<\/em>: in Italian,\u00a0<em>Pan Porcino<\/em>: in Spanish,\u00a0<em>Mazan de Puerco<\/em>: in High Dutch,\u00a0<em>Schweinbrot<\/em>: in Low Dutch\u00a0<em>Uetkins Brot<\/em>: in French,\u00a0<em>Pain de Porceau<\/em>: in English, Sow-Bread. Pliny calleth the colour of this flower in Latin,\u00a0<em>Colossinus color<\/em>: in English, murrey colour.\u201d Cyclamen\u2019s common name &#8216;sowbread&#8217; suggests the tubers were eaten by pigs.<\/p>\n<p>Here are assorted historic depictions of Cyclamen:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A 19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century printing of an <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcollections.nypl.org\/items\/5e66b3e8-7066-d471-e040-e00a180654d7\">Arabic translation of Dioscorides<\/a> by \u1e24unayn ibn Is\u1e25\u0101q al-\u02bbIb\u0101d\u012b (809?-873 C.E.). Note the Arabic name q\u00fbql\u00e2m\u00een\u00fbs\u00a0, based on the Greek name.<\/li>\n<li>From <a href=\"https:\/\/runeberg.org\/floradan\/1487.html\"><em>Flora Danica<\/em><\/a> by Simon Paulli (1648)<\/li>\n<li>This image, Cyclamen Folio Hederic (The Ivy-leaved Cyclamen), comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.famsf.org\/artworks\/cyclamen-folio-hederic-the-ivy-leaved-cyclamen-plate-14-from-the-autumn-series-of-the-book-hortus-floridus-utrecht-officina-calcographica-cr-passaei-1614\"><em>Hortus Floridus<\/em><\/a> by \u00a0Crispijn de Passe II \u00a0(Utrecht: Officina Calcographica Cr. Passaei, 1614), and the tubers are depicted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.famsf.org\/artworks\/radix-cyclamini-cyclamen-roots-unnumbered-plate-following-plate-25-from-the-autumn-series-of-the-book-hortus-floridus-utrecht-officina-calcographica-cr-passaei-1614\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Antonio Guarnerino da Padova\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:68-1441.2.jpg\"><em>Herbe Pincte<\/em><\/a> (1441) contains an illustration of Cyclamen, and there are two Cyclamen images (images 45 and 46) in an anonymous 15<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century <a href=\"https:\/\/colenda.library.upenn.edu\/catalog\/81431-p3n87308d\">Northern Italian herbal<\/a>, using the &#8216;sowbread&#8217; common name.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"taxonomy-keyword has-text-align-right wp-block-post-terms\"><a href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/keyword\/botanical-illustration\/\" rel=\"tag\">Botanical illustration<\/a><span class=\"wp-block-post-terms__separator\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/keyword\/botanical-nomenclature\/\" rel=\"tag\">Botanical nomenclature<\/a><span class=\"wp-block-post-terms__separator\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/keyword\/common-names\/\" rel=\"tag\">Common names<\/a><span class=\"wp-block-post-terms__separator\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/keyword\/cyclamen\/\" rel=\"tag\">Cyclamen<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I know that Cyclamen is officially named in Linnaeus\u2019s Species Plantarum, but I am guessing the name\u2019s origin is earlier.
