It has<br \/>\nnot grown much, and has been looking bad lately, so I thought it<br \/>\nwas probably root bound. To my surprise, when I took it out, there<br \/>\nwere no new roots&#8211;the root ball was about 3&#8243; deep and 6&#8243;<br \/>\nacross. Is this a normal root for the <em>Ilex<\/em>? What does it need to thrive?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since you mention that the plant is not looking healthy, I wonder if it<br \/>\nmay have root rot.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/chatham.ces.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alternatives-to-Pest-Prone-Landscape-Plants-Online.pdf?fwd=no\">North Carolina Cooperative Extension,<\/a> <em>Ilex crenata<\/em> is<br \/>\nhighly susceptible to this fungal problem.<\/p>\n<p>It is possible that there are <a href=\"https:\/\/content.ces.ncsu.edu\/extension-gardener-handbook\/5-diseases-and-disorders#section_heading_7615\">nematodes<\/a> feeding on the roots and<br \/>\ndiminishing the plant&#8217;s ability to get water and nutrients from the soil.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Organic Gardener&#8217;s Handbook of Natural Insect &amp; Disease Control<\/em> by<br \/>\nBarbara Ellis (Rodale, 1996) says that holly roots grow close to the<br \/>\nsurface, so perhaps the size of the root ball is not abnormal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.missouribotanicalgarden.org\/PlantFinder\/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?kempercode=v890\">Missouri Botanical Garden<\/a> has general information on this plant.<\/p>\n<p>To determine what exactly is causing the plant&#8217;s ill health, you may want<br \/>\nto bring pictures and samples of the affected parts of the holly to a<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/extension.wsu.edu\/king\/gardening\/\">Master Gardener Clinic<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I purchased a gallon size Japanese Holly (Ilex crenata &#8216;Sky Sentry&#8217;) 5 years ago and put it in a 12&#8243; diameter container.
