{"id":3249,"date":"2020-01-18T00:12:57","date_gmt":"2020-01-18T08:12:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/pal\/pal-question-883\/"},"modified":"2024-04-20T11:14:23","modified_gmt":"2024-04-20T18:14:23","slug":"growing-wasabi-in-the-northwest","status":"publish","type":"pal","link":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/pal\/growing-wasabi-in-the-northwest\/","title":{"rendered":"Growing wasabi in the Northwest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>I would like information about growing wasabi in the Northwest, such as how to propagate it, and ideal growing conditions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t have any books in the Miller Library on wasabi propagation, and most general propagation books do not include wasabi (the plant&#8217;s botanical name is <em>Eutrema<\/em>, though there is some taxonomic disagreement over the species name, and the genus is sometimes listed as <em>Wasabia<\/em>). Cultivation of wasabi in this country is a relatively new endeavor, so the more current the source, the better. I did a journal search in Web of Science, and could not find anything on wasabi propagation or cultivation. There may simply be little information out there.<\/p>\n<p>A colleague here in the Miller Library says that wasabi is a notoriously difficult-to-grow plant, and the fact that it requires cold running water throughout the year seems to preclude growing it in a climate which has freezing conditions in winter, unless you are able to protect the plants from frost damage.<\/p>\n<p>Washington State University&#8217;s publication, <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.wp.wsu.edu\/uploads\/sites\/2071\/2014\/04\/Wasabi-in-Pacific-NW-pnw0605.pdf\">&#8220;Growing Wasabi in the Pacific Northwest,&#8221;<\/a> by Carol Miles and Catherine Chadwick, may be especially helpful to you. There is an <a href=\"http:\/\/agsyst.wsu.edu\/wasabiarticle.html\">earlier article<\/a> by Miles from WSU&#8217;s Vegetable Research facility. It was published in PNW Sustainable Agriculture Newsletter in October of 1996.<\/p>\n<p>Purdue University&#8217;s New Crops site offers the following information on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hort.purdue.edu\/newcrop\/proceedings1993\/V2-051.html#Wasabi\">wasabi<\/a> cultivation. It contains a link to an article on growing wasabi in New Zealand, which has some climate similarities to our region.<\/p>\n<p>An article on <a href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wasabi-John-A-Ball.pdf\">wasabi by John A. Ball<\/a> includes a list of growers. You will notice that several are in the Pacific Northwest.<\/p>\n<p>Although it is not specific to the Pacific Northwest, Utah State University has a concise guide to <a href=\"http:\/\/extension.usu.edu\/files\/publications\/publication\/HG_Garden_2006-11.pdf\">growing wasabi in the garden.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Mother Earth News<\/em> also published an article on wasabi cultivation in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherearthnews.com\/organic-gardening\/garden-and-yard-wasabi-cultivation-zmaz04onzsel\">October\/November 2004<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"taxonomy-keyword has-text-align-right wp-block-post-terms\"><a href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hortlib\/keyword\/eutrema\/\" rel=\"tag\">Eutrema<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I would like information about growing wasabi in the Northwest, such as how to propagate it, and ideal growing conditions.
