Not only do they benefit employees, but they can also have a good <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2010\/12\/whats-the-hard-return-on-employee-wellness-programs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">return on investment for employers<\/a>, boosting morale and retention while decreasing absenteeism and turnover. Often these programs are built for larger companies that have the resources and personnel to manage them. So, what adaptations should be made to workplace wellness programs for small business employees and employers reap their benefits? The Latino Workplace Project, led by researchers from the <a href=\"https:\/\/hspop.uw.edu\/research\/research-centers\/heart\/\">Health Equity Action Research Team (HEART) <\/a>within the Health Promotion Research Center aimed to find out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Understanding community needs<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>HEART collaborated with small (10 employees or less) Latino-owned businesses to identify key barriers and facilitators to adopting health promotion interventions in their businesses. They also focused on determining how <a href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hprc\/programs-tools\/connect-to-wellness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Connect to Wellness<\/a>, a workplace wellness program tailored to small businesses, could be adapted to make it more applicable for Latino-owned businesses both culturally and structurally. \u201cThe goal was to understand what helps or what makes it hard for businesses to adopt a workplace wellness program that will benefit the individual, their families, their customers and employees,\u201d said Amy Hernandez, research coordinator for the project. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trust: the key to success<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To make the project a success, team members needed to build trusting relationships with community members. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of mistrust within the community of outsiders coming into the businesses and community and offering services. Business owners aren\u2019t as open to hearing about new projects or resources because they\u2019ve been disappointed so much in the past,\u201d said Hernandez. To combat this mistrust the team partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bfhd.wa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Benton-Franklin Health District<\/a>, that already had working relationships with both the community and the research team. \u201cWe built trust by being transparent about the projects goals, limitations and funding of the project,\u201d said Daisy Para-Padilla, policy analyst in the Equity and Engagement Program for Benton-Franklin Health District. \u201cWe followed through on promises and made sure to keep community updated every step of the way.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>HEART also brought on team members with direct ties to the community, who conducted in-person outreach, \u201cWe showed up with our UW lanyards, introduced ourselves in person,\u201d said Mirima Flores Moreno, 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Year PhD student and graduate research assistant for the project. \u201cIt was special to conduct research in my hometown\u2014it was fulfilling to show up and show the community that we were there to support its needs.\u201d With their existing connections to the community, the team was able to partner with other trusted community organizations and members to push the research forward.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Workplace wellness programs for the collective<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The research team shared findings with participants and the broader community through infographics and by creating a resource poster. \u201cWe presented the information in a way that was easy to understand in both English and Spanish,\u201d said Hernandez. \u201cOne business owner displayed the resource poster for customers to see,\u201d said Flores Moreno. \u201cIt was rewarding to see the trust in our work, and it really emphasized the importance of collective care to the community.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>HEART aims to find funding to implement the Connect to Wellness adaptations identified by community members. \u201cWe hope to make culturally relevant changes that shift the focus of Connect to Wellness from a siloed individual employee to a broader multigenerational view,\u201d said Para-Padilla.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers at HPRC collaborated with small business owners to understand needs for workplace wellness and adapt Connect to Wellness.<\/p>\n<div><a class=\"more\" href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/hprc\/connect-to-wellness-adaptation\/\">Read more<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"author":11,"featured_media":11553,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[28,20,6],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-11552","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-connect-to-wellness","category-team-updates","category-workplace-wellness"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.4 -
