Climate Change

Climate change is caused by extreme conditions when the earth gets too warm, ice starts to melt, and flooding happens. To reduce gas emissions being put into the atmosphere, we can start using clean energy sources such as solar and wind power. improving technology to save energy, and plant more trees to absorb these harmful gasses. Using better methods for transportation like using more electric than gas cars. The governments are able to enforce pollution regulations reducing the amount of gas that's released into our atmosphere. Individuals can contribute to this by conserving energy, resources, recycling, and making environmentally friendly choices. By adopting cleaner transportation like electric vehicles and public transit, the emissions from vehicles are greatly reduced. Sustainable practices like organic farming and reduced fertilizer use can lower greenhouse gas emissions. Government policies and regulations play a big role in controlling these emissions like the pollution standards mentioned earlier. By spreading awareness, it increases and improves the public's understanding of climate change and how harmful it's starting to become for the planet. Investing in research and development for clean energy technologies accelerates the transition to a low carbon economy. Also, encouraging innovation in carbon capture and storage technologies can further reduce emissions from industrial processes. Promoting sustainable land management preserves carbon sinks like forests and wetlands. Transitioning to a circular economy model minimizes waste and reduces emissions associated with production and consumption. Addressing deforestation and promoting reforestation efforts restore ecosystems and help maintain carbon dioxide levels. The governments can incentivize emission reductions through carbon pricing mechanisms and emissions programs. Public infrastructure investments in renewable energy support these goals. By implementing these measures we can very easily reduce these harmful gasses and use the proper resources to control climate change and save our planet.

HAVE CHANGE FOR CLIMATE CHANGE

Earth may never be the same if we humans keep living like this. Everything would be different due to climate change. But today I will share with you how to avoid it. First of all, what is climate change? Climate change is changing average weather, making it warmer, wetter, or drier for a short or long period. How can humans do differently to avoid the effects of climate change? In this paper, I will explore the concept of climate change, its primary causes, the impact of the greenhouse effect, and steps we can all take to lower its effects.

The Greenhouse effect is a metaphor for what is happening to Earth now. A greenhouse is a house with glass on all sides and plants inside. We are allowing sunlight to get into it. When the Sun sets the heat will still be trapped inside keeping the plants warm throughout the night or during winter. Humans are also inside our little greenhouse when we emit too many greenhouse gasses, including Carbon Dioxide, Methane, and Water Vapor. Before humans had the right amount of greenhouse gasses, but due to human activities, we now experience more greenhouse gasses, making Earth hotter. These greenhouse gasses may come from burning fossil fuels and driving cars. This makes Earth hotter due to the amount of gasses we are making, and letting it be trapped in our atmosphere. We are inside the greenhouse trapped with all this heat. Completely eradicating climate change to 0 would be impossible. But we can still slowly decrease the number we have right now. I will tell you how we can slowly decrease climate change. First, we could save energy at home. If you're not in a room you can close the lights, or you would be wasting energy and money. Switching to renewable energy sources such as solar or wind can significantly reduce your carbon footprint. We can reduce, reuse, repair, and recycle. All these could slowly decrease or stop climate change.
We need to start thinking about the next generation. If we don't act now the next generation would need to clean up the mess that we made. So why not start doing it and then let humans suffer?
Now we know how humans can act differently to avoid climate change. In short, we could change the world if we start doing this. In conclusion, we humans must act on climate change.

What happens if we loose the ability to plant as many trees?

What happens if we loose the ability to plant as many trees? If we want to breathe fresh air outside while walking to get groceries, we need plants. We need to have more plants than the production of CO2 by cars, oil industries, etc. No matter how hard we try, CO2 will always be there to ruin our days. The Ozone layer got healed during Covid time since there was a lockdown and people didn’t use cars (no one could go outside) and the Earth healed by half. But, now it is disintegrating again since there was a boost in the economy since the last 4 years and we need to produce CO2 for that. Too much CO2 for plants to use and to make oxygen can kill the plants, and the population is growing due to large economic growth. And we need to cut down trees for food, homework assignments, furniture, paper to wipe your butt and to blow your nose, etc. If we cut down too many tress, the whole world will fall apart and human civilization can die out.

Onshore wind turbines

Onshore wind turbines are the obvious choice for clean energy generation, as they outperform offshore wind turbines in many different ways. Onshore wind turbines have three main advantages that set them apart from their competitor, offshore wind turbines.
Firstly, onshore wind turbines offer substantial cost advantages over offshore turbines. Onshore turbines are nearly four thousand dollars per kilowatt-hour cheaper, therefore they provide quality wind power at a mere fraction of the cost. This affordability makes clean, easy to harvest energy accessible for anyone. According to the American Wind Energy Association, small onshore wind turbines cost between $3,000 to $5,000 for every kilowatt of power. This makes them considerably better than offshore wind turbines.
Secondly, the ease of installation and maintenance is a huge defining feature of the onshore wind turbines. Due to their convenient locations on land, they are a lot more accessible. This leads to reduced downtime and fewer repairs. This then translates into less disruption for all th
Lastly, onshore wind turbines demonstrate a clear environmental advantage over offshore alternatives. By harnessing wind power on land, these turbines minimize the ecological impact associated with offshore installations. Their operation produces clean, natural energy, contributing to a healthier environment and sustainable future.
In conclusion, the evidence supports the assertion that onshore wind turbines surpass offshore options in terms of cost-effectiveness, ease of maintenance, and environmental benefits. As a result, prioritizing the development and utilization of onshore wind energy stands as a prudent choice for advancing clean energy initiatives and mitigating environmental concerns.

Thomashollins   2024-03-22 08:14:16

I agree, onshore wind turbines are very helpful to reducing carbon emission. They produce a lot of energy without using fossil fuels. The resources used to get the running is completely natural and only ends up in net energy that is environment friendly. Wind turbines are great ways to make energy for communities and help the environment by giving a way to make energy from the natural wind.

High Speed Rails

Implementing high speed rails can reduce an incredible amount of GHG emissions. High speed rails are basically emission free, and are cheap for the consumer (Unlike gas). High speed rails will also take many cars off the road, which in turn will reduce the amount of car crash deaths in the U.S. High speed rails are also 180 mph. The U.S. already has a train that is capable of being a High speed rail, so we know it is feasible. High speed rail is also in other countries. When it becomes more widespread in the U.S. it could greatly reduce flights and cars on the road. High speed rails are something we need in our lives.

How we can help stop climate change

We can help stop climate change by powering our homes with renewable energy that are certified by certain organizations such as the Green-e-Energy organization. Another action that can help stop climate change is reducing your water waste as it reduces carbon pollution and you can reduce it by taking shorter showers and turning off the water while brushing  your teeth. Th last and final action you can do to help stop climate change is only buying food you know you are going to eat as composting the food you aren’t going to eat can send a lot of methane into the atmosphere.

I agree with your points; they are essential to help end climate change. I do think the more important things are mining fossil fuels and factories these have high footprints but as people, there is little we can do about this besides support companies with little to no impression. Individually I agree but I think what humans in our area emit the most is travel. Helping lower this can really help lower your footprint we can do this by carpooling or using public transportation whenever possible along with driving instead of using a plane. Planes emit so much carbon and not taking them could really improve your footprint. I agree with everything you said but I think transportation is really important, especially in America.

We can help climate change by actually putting in effort to make a change. Instead of just preaching that climate change is bad, use that energy to influence other individuals. Even starting with small things could influence others to follow along.

I agree with your points; I think there are more things also to account here, first f all I think that if we reduce the amount of transportation via fossil fuel ran vehicles, we can solve a big problem; I think we can solve this by carpooling or having EV Vehicles, etc.

I think it would be a great help if people converted to electrical cars, although that's kinda hard since they're very expensive.

I agree! Sure, how you change your lifestyle doesn't matter in the picture by itself, but if everyone changes their lifestyle, no matter how small the changes are, it can really make a difference.I also agree with the fact that transportation is a big contributor to carbon emissions and that we as a society should improve on how we go about getting from A to B.

What climate change resources can reduce carbon emission?

Climate change resources are great for reducing carbon emissions. Climate change resources are great for reducing carbon emission because they renews the heat and energy that usually gets trap from the sun but, it gets but to good use like cars, air conditioning, solar panels and plenty more. Another climate resource that is great for reducing carbon emission are wind turbines. Wind turbines are good because they create wind without using any carbon emissions.

climate change

Climate change is the significant variation of average weather conditions becoming, for example, warmer, wetter, or drier—over several decades or longer. As greenhouse gas emissions blanket the Earth, they trap the sun's heat. This leads to global warming and climate change. Global warming can result in many serious alterations to the environment, eventually impacting human health.Human Activity Is the Cause of Increased Greenhouse Gas Concentrations.

How humans cause greenhouse emissions.

You may not know how the human population is greatly affecting the amount of greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere. We emit these gasses by doing everyday activities such as driving, flying on an airplane, heating our homes, and much more. Once these gases are being released into the atmosphere, it bounces back and returns to Earth, creating more warmth in the world. As humans, we need to do everything we can to help the Earth and every beautiful species on it so it can continue to thrive and go on.

Reducing Your Carbon Footprint: Simple Steps for a Sustainable Future

Carbon footprint is a measure of the total greenhouse gas emissions produced by human activities, such as transportation, energy use, and food production. As the world continues to develop and consume more resources, our carbon footprint has grown to unsustainable levels. The impact of climate change is being felt globally, from rising sea levels to extreme weather events, and reducing our carbon footprint is a critical step towards mitigating these effects. Here are some ways we can reduce our carbon footprint:

1.Drive less and walk, bike, or use public transportation more.
2.Reduce energy use at home by turning off lights and unplugging electronics when not in use.
3.Eat less meat and dairy, as these industries have high carbon footprints.
4.Support renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.
5.Use reusable bags, containers, and water bottles instead of disposable ones.
6.Choose products made from sustainable materials.
7.Plant trees and support reforestation efforts.
8.Buy locally sourced products to reduce transportation emissions.
9.Support policies that promote clean energy and sustainability.
10.Reduce food waste by planning meals and composting.

Reducing our carbon footprint is essential for the health of the planet and the future of humanity. Let's all do our part to create a more sustainable world.

Nice examples! We all should follow them!

Krishh188   2023-11-01 17:31:48

I agree with all of your examples and think that reducing our carbon footprint is undeniably crucial in addressing the pressing challenges posed by climate change. Our growing carbon footprint, largely a result of increased resource consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, has led to widespread and detrimental consequences, from severe weather events to disruptions in ecosystems. Implementing the suggested measures to lower our carbon emissions is not only a collective responsibility but also an opportunity for positive change. By embracing sustainable transportation options, efficient energy practices, dietary choices that reduce the carbon-intensive meat and dairy industries, and supporting renewable energy sources, we can collectively work towards a more environmentally responsible future. Additionally, initiatives like reforestation and local sourcing can play a vital role in curbing emissions, and our individual efforts can be amplified by advocating for policies that promote clean energy and sustainability. As we reduce our carbon footprint through these multifaceted approaches, we contribute to the well-being of our planet and ensure a more sustainable world for future generations.

Elijah1928   2023-11-02 14:14:00

I like all of these methods you have presented. I definitely try to do most of these things at home and I want to do more and I plan to. Something that I have been thinking about doing is convincing my parents to implement solar energy into our home, although it is expensive it can go a long way in reducing our carbon footprint.

Zack L   2023-11-02 21:01:41

The list you provided is a great introduction to the topic of reducing our carbon footprint. It accurately defines carbon footprint and explains its importance, and it provides a list of specific actions that we can take to reduce our impact on the environment. However, I would like to add other options that can spread to others. These options are: Educating ourselves and others on this subject, Advocating for change and policies that can enforce sustainability, and supporting projects/businesses who are working towards these goals.

Pakhin   2023-11-03 09:09:50

I agree with most of these steps although for numbers 1, 3, and 6 I am kind of in the middle of disagree and agreeing. For number 1 what if they live in a dangerous neighborhood, especially if it’s dark out and for example your walking home from work. And number 3 what if the person has a weak bone structure and they need milk, and eating less meat won’t affect their industry at all because meat gives us protein which can give us muscle. Lastly for number 6 what if the sustainable products are more expensive than your average product. Especially since if most of the population is less wealthy it might not be a better option to buy the sustainable products.

anything can help

Most people when thinking  of a wealthy or rich person they are thinking of a celebrity, and we almost never think of ourselves as having more than enough but that simply isn't the case. We take for granted many little things that we do, consume, waste, buy, use, daily, like myself i take unnecessarily long showers, i take them without any consideration of how much water i am wasting or don't need to be using. I think as a whole we all have something that is very harmful towards the environment, that you might be doing daily. If there is any way that you can lessen your carbon footprint, please do so.

Is a Meatless Diet Good for the Environment?

In the U.S, each household produces 48 tons of greenhouse gases each year. The three biggest contributors to this are transport, housing, and food. Food is about 17% of that total, and it is the easiest thing to cut down on. Worldwide, it is estimated that livestock agriculture produces around 50% of man-made emissions. Changing the foods you eat can greatly impact your carbon emissions, and these are the best foods to do so:
- Lentils (0.9 CO2 kilos per kilo)
- Fruit (1.1 CO2 kilos per kilo)
- Vegetables (2.0 CO2 kilos per kilo)

One of the worst foods to reduce carbon emissions is beef. One kilogram of beef is equivalent to driving 63 miles. Even worse is a kilo of lamb, which is the equivalent to driving 93 miles. Overall, becoming vegetarian reduces food emissions by half, which will improve the environment tremendously, as well as make animals happy.
https://www.greeneatz.com/foods-carbon- … 's%20diet.

jamu   2023-05-12 10:21:30

I agree with this, a lot of the reason why peoples carbon footprints are so high is because they eat a lot of meat. The average person eats 17 ounces of meat per week. Also by choosing a vegetarian diet instead of one loaded with animal products, individuals can dramatically reduce the amount of land, water, and oil resources that they consume and the amount of pollution they otherwise might cause. When you eat more greens, it with end up being healthier for you  and overall just make planet earth better.

Electric car

My parents both have electric/ semi electric cars. We made the switch about a year ago to help the environment and save gas money. My mom has an suv that is a hybrid, and gets about 40 miles on pure electric. This is the perfect amount to get her to work and back, and pick me up from lacrosse practice. We use this car for when we go a far distance, because we will need gas at some point. My dads car is a lot smaller and fully electric. He doesn’t travel much because he works from home, so it’s perfect for him. It’s cheaper and is much better for the environment

There are many other ways to prevent using a lot amount of greenhouse gases but these are some examples.
* Use less electricity
especially when it comes from burning coal or gas
*Shrink the footprint of food.
Today, about a fifth of global carbon emissions come from raising farm animals for meat.
* Travel without making greenhouse gases.
Burning fossil fuels for transportation adds up to 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions worldwide

Oil Energy

In the world, energy sources such as oil and coal are the most used and they are also the biggest contributors to carbon emissions. However, we should focus on cutting back on oil since wealthy countries use it more than coal and they also are the biggest contributors to emissions. For example, the US which produces the most and consumes the most oil also is near the top of Co2 emissions. If it cuts back on its use of oil then its emissions will decrease by a large amount.

How online gaming has become a social lifetime

“Our entire lives have led up to this,” my friends joked with me in mid-March.

I was sitting in my tiny New York City apartment, panicky and coming to terms with the reality that I’d be trapped inside for weeks, potentially months. But my friends reassured me that as lifelong video game enthusiasts, the prospect of sitting on a sofa in front of a TV for an interminable stretch would be a cakewalk. After all, gamers like me do already spend plenty of time in front of our screens all on our own.

But even sitting alone for hours, gamers aren’t necessarily isolated. In many cases, far from it. With the rise of social media, gamers – particularly in Gen Z – have perfected the art of building communities in and around video games. Gamers don’t just compete with strangers on the internet, but forge genuine, enduring friendships.

In this age of long-haul social distancing and mental-health strains, gamers have long had a tool that’s now bringing some relief to those who’ve never picked up a controller before. The explosive growth of gaming during the pandemic has shown that many have found a new outlet for much-needed connection in isolation.

The resources that we can help with climate change

Climate change has gotten worse and worse throughout the years and as humans who live in this planet we should make it a goal to help out so that later generation don't have to be living in a world where our planet is being damaged by us. Some thing that we can do to help out is to use less plastic in our planet and reduce the consumption of how much we use it. Yes we can recycle our plastic but in reality only 5% of our plastic is being recycle and the rest is being thrown in land fields that go to our ocean. Resources that we can use is watching how to reduce plastic videos and educate our self in the problems that we as human are causing.

Consumption

Hi everyone!
First and foremost, I’d like to thank the ISCFC’s crew for letting us be a part of this project. I truly think that it can help us understand how our habits can impact our carbon footprint and the environment by the way.
Nevertheless, I’m living on an Island and I really want to understand how we could make things go better. After many researches, I have concluded that the only way to  reverse the trend is not modifying our way to consume but reducing our consumption. We also have to change some of our behaviors but first, we have to REDUCE our consumption. Finding new green resources is full of progresse but it doesn’t mean anything if we use them to increase our consumption. I’d like to hear your feedbacks on this, in the mean time, make sure you completely turn off your computer after you’ve read this ; )

Energy generation in Germany

Hello everyone,
In Germany we also have a problem with our resources and our energy production.  Far too much of our energy is generated by lignite.  But this is very harmful for the climate. But the burning of the coal is also directly dangerous for the people. It also produces harmful substances such as nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide and mercury. This is dangerous for people because the substances damage the respiratory tract.
Also the "external costs" that arise in this way should be taken into account. For example, the health damage caused by the pollutants.
In addition, forests have been and are being destroyed in order to build new power plants. As a result, the polluted air cannot be filtered because there are not enough trees and many animal species would lose their habitat.  This would not only be extremely sad but would also cause costs.
Germany is one of the largest CO2 producers in the world. This must not be! Germany should definitely stop burning lignite before 2038!
What do you think?

Cam.brown12   2021-03-04 12:27:47

There are many ways you can change the ways in which you heat your home or provide energy for your household. If applicable remove yourself from the grid, or seek climate friendly alternatives like solar or wind power. In addition, the rise of other green power alternatives like geothermal energy and hydro power have made it easier to reduce your carbon footprint while still being able to heat your home and provide energy for your home.

terezija   2021-05-19 11:30:13

Yes, it sounds very complicated. It's almost like there's no "way out." I recently read about “green energy” which actually includes renewable natural sources (like the Sun). Green energy does not pollute our planet. Generating energy that produces no greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels and reduces some types of air pollution. One of the positive things about green energy is that green energy deals are no more or less expensive than standard energy deals, on the whole. So, yes... If you want to see more about this, here's one good link about how Denmark tried green energy:

WAG831   2021-06-01 12:20:13

Yes, in America there is a large issue with the burning of coal and fracking. The issue is that all the politicians want to generate revenue for their campaign so nothing really ever gets changed in America because if you want to win an election and change things in the government it is very hard because of these large corporations that give the money to the politicians if they don't do anything about climate change which makes it so that there's not an easy way to win.

Climate change

I believe Climate change is real and was created by humans. As we know, the atmosphere is only supose to take a certain amount of carbon, but humans have gotten in the way. This interfeirance of human life is causing the atmosphere to overwealm itself. This causes extreme dryness, icecaps melting, and habitats being ruined. Us as a society need to change our unhealthy ways and change for the better so that not only we can live a healthy life, but all living things around us as well.

My carbon footprint

The calculator showed that I had a lower-than-average carbon footprint, but transportation accounted for the majority of it. I participate in extracurricular activities five days a week, which are 10 miles apart, so it's a 20-mile round trip every time. I go to school four days a week, and it's a 10-mile round trip and a 20-mile round trip. I average 180 miles per week. I may cut down on this by carpooling with others and using public transportation.

During 2021, climate change has been one of the biggest prolbems in the world. It is contributing to sea rise and slowly warming up the globe. In some more sevire cases it has even melted 80% of a large glacier in a few years. If the problem of climate change is not adressed it could do damage that will never be reversed.

What can trees do to help climate change

It is very obvious that climate change is real and needs to be resolved. A solution that seems quite simple yet hasn't been used well are trees. Trees help not only reduce the energy we use but also help the environment and climate change.
Let me explain:
* First they create large areas of shade which than decreases the amount of energy needed for Ac
* Second They create O2 which is needed for most types of life to live. Plus they filter out Green house gasses to minimalize global warming.
*Third They are habitats for animals to live and hide and are a natural part of the environment unlike human made buildings.
*Fourth they lower the amount of erosion because of their roots to keep streets and urban areas cleaner and protect things like mountains and cliffs. Which than ends up protecting animals that rely on that land to survive.

How to lower carbon footprint around the world

I believe there are many ways to reduce the global carbon footprint; here are a few of my suggestions. From a young age, we should teach children how to reduce their carbon footprint so that they can continue to practice these practices throughout their lives.I also think it would be a good idea to recognize countries like India or China that are having trouble reducing their carbon footprint so that we can provide additional assistance to them. The most important step in reducing your carbon footprint is to figure out how you contribute the most, so you can change your habits and reduce the global carbon footprint.

Firstly, Requiring companies to be accountable for the pollution they cause. Making laws to reform bad policies that allow companies to emit fossil fuels, damaging eco systems, through dumping pollution and extracting resources. Requiring every person and people who have time specifically to grow a garden from tax money that they should implement instead of voiceless military weapons. To help limit climate change it should also be required to plant 4 trees at least wherever people desire.

we have to take care of our environment, because it cannot take care of itself. First I think we need to gather a certain group of people, each of whom will be responsible for certain responsibilities. For example, one group will be responsible for cleaning leaves and debris in the park. this garbage will sort and recycle. People who live near the sea or ocean should take care of sea inhabitants, as well as about the coast. For this, they should stop throwing garbage into the water and on the coast. I think this will help the environment.

Jfan23   2021-01-06 18:12:13

Hello, this needing to reduce electricity usage is true but very hard.

Take a phone. When it's plugged in it's drawing on average 20 watts, depending on the phone and charging brick. So if you charge it overnight that's a lot of watts. Electric cars are responsible for this as well. When you drive in something like a Tesla, you are constantly using a lot of energy driving to your destination and even more to a special Supercharger, which 99% of the time is not on the route. Then, to kill time in the half hour that it spends charging, your phone will be used again. All of this means that countries like Britain are only producing 20% more energy than they use, from already massive power stations. Electricity is also needed to produce these cars and phones, especially the cars, most which require rare earth materials in their batteries which essentially hurt the Earth even more than if you use a gas car. The saved emissions that an electric car brings along is nowhere near enough to substitute. Substitutes for electricity such as wind power are more expensive and less efficient, plus the transition period will be extremely painful for most businesses because their production machines will depend in some way on electricity. The additional jobs created will not be able to make up for the loss of jobs that electricity's replacement will displace. Also, the existing power lines will have to be dug up and replaced, causing more damage. Nearly everything today depends on some form of electricity, and efforts can certainly be made to reduce usage. But until we find a viable replacement, completely siphoning every drop of electricity is away is not the answer.

ChankinsBOD1   2020-03-16 15:38:09

As humans we can do many things to lower our carbon emissions. One obvious one is to use your car less. There are many other alternatives. One is to walk or bike which does not effect anything at all and can get you into better shape as a person as well. There is also carpooling which from personal experience is something that can be enjoyed especially when you carpool with friends. It gives less need for many cars and all people have to do is agree that they will ride together. Then we can also use public transportation which can take many people at once. Lastly, we can also start to buy and make more electric cars which cotap.org says emit no CO2.

Climate Change and Why meat is bad for the environment

1st post

While food systems are complicated, and research is still evolving on what the most environmentally friendly diet is, experts mostly agree that cutting down on meat, and red meat in particular, is a better choice for the environment. This is because the production of red meat uses a lot of feed, water and land. Cows themselves also give off methane emissions, which is a harmful greenhouse gas.  (from:https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/2019/01/commission-report-great-food-transformation-plant-diet-climate-change/  For that reason, eating a vegan diet is likely to be best for the environment, say experts. According to a study published in 2017 in the journal Environmental Research Letters, red meat can have up to 100 times the environmental impact of plant based food. According to some estimates, beef gives off more than six pounds of carbon dioxide per serving; the amount created per serving by rice, legumes carrots, apples or potatoes is less than half a pound.

2nd post
Scientists attribute the global warming trend observed since the mid-20th century to the human expansion of the "greenhouse effect"1 — warming that results when the atmosphere traps heat radiating from Earth toward space. Certain gases in the atmosphere block heat from escaping. Long-lived gases that remain semi-permanently in the atmosphere and do not respond physically or chemically to changes in temperature are described as "forcing" climate change. Gases, such as water vapor, which respond physically or chemically to changes in temperature are seen as "feedbacks." https://climate.nasa.gov/causes/

Phantom Electricity

Living in a capitalist society, the name of the game is money. Seeking money, big shots have done whatever it takes from wiping rainforests to destroying the ocean in the end result of more money. Recently these actions have finally had some consequences. Scientists have stepped up declaring a worldwide issue of climate change. From everyday tasks like eating chips or going on your desktop affect our world greatly. Humans have adapted to this new lazy lifestyle resulting in people creating massive carbon footprints. A simple way to reduce your carbon footprint takes place in your home. All of those adapters, cords, and chargers plugged in are using some energy. It is known to be "standby" electricity loss due to its correlation with electrons in idle or standby, however the correct jargon is "phantom" or "vampire" electricity. This means that the charger or cord is still using power even if no appliance or device is on or even connected. Though a small amount of energy is being consumed it begins to add up with so many instances occurring in your house. Not only would unplugging these cords or chargers when not in use diminish your carbon footprint but also save you money. According to the New York Times, "the cost of plugged-in but not used devices is about $165 per household, or $19 billion across the U.S. That amounts to about 44 million tons of carbon dioxide, or 4.6% of the country’s total residential electricity generation." The amount of wasted money over a task that takes less than a second is outrageous. All in all, getting rid of phantom electricity is a money saver and helps your carbon footprint.

The big companies need to start showing more social responsibility!

There are growing discussions in our society about pollution and our footprints on this world. I think there is too much focus on how much the homes are contaminating and we are trying to pollute less. It is very hard when everything we buy is full of plastic packages. For example when we buy candy , the candy is in a plastic bag, inside there is plast around it and then all the candy is in plast inside the plastic. So i think the companies should start finding solutions! I know some companies are on that mission but this has to stop now! What can the companies do? We as consumers need to raise our voice because the companies are depended on us as consumers.

monroejBOD2   2020-03-16 09:31:21

I agree with this statement very much. The amount of plastic waste created by the things we buy is increasing our carbon footprint by a tremendous amount. In the U.S over 14 million tons of plastic are produced each year, created from plastic bags to candy wrappers and much more. To help this problem we should definitely take it to the companies, but we should also take it to our politicians and government to create regulations to help stop this problem. What the companies could do, is use paper wrapping, or recyclable wrapping to reduce the amount of carbon created from their products.

MJungeBOD7   2020-03-16 18:16:50

I agree with the statement "the big companies need to start showing more social responsibility." I also agree with the multiple post talking about how plastic affects our environment. However, plastic isn't the only thing that big companies produce that hurt our world. One big industry that is currently destroying our planet is the Palm Oil Industry. Palm Oil is in pretty much everything, from chips to hair products. According to https://www.scientificamerican.com/arti … inforests/, throughout the past years, rainforest in Indonesia have become smaller by almost 50 percent. This is heavily due to the palm oil industry. This hurts many of the rainforest wildlife due to their homes being cut down. For example, the endargered orangatang lives in these rainforests. They depend on the different wildlife in the rainforest and due to the palm oil industries, they are slowly dying because they aren't getting the food and nutrients that they need to live. Also according to Scientific American (sited above), not only are they hurting the wildlife directly, but they are also releasing carbon dioxide into the air. This is a big cause of global warming and we need to put a stop to these big industries burning down the worlds rainforest's for money.

Food waste has a serious impact on global warming.

food waste releases greenhouse gas even more potent than carbon dioxide. About 11% of all the greenhouse gas emissions that come from the food system could be reduced if we stop wasting food.
what can we do to change that, is global warming that serious?

Corona Virus Reduces Global Carbon Footprint

Even though the Coronavirus is responsible for school shutdowns, various company bankruptcies, etc. it is very beneficial for the health of the planet. The Coronavirus has slowed most public transportations including the ones with the heaviest carbon footprints. One of the least fuel-efficient methods of public transportation is flying.  Planes, according to Christey Allen, a research coordinator at the Prairie Climate Centre in Winnipeg, says that planes have a far worse carbon footprint than cars. In 2018, commercial airlines burned 94 billion gallons of fossil fuel globally. Flying alone is responsible for at least 2 percent of global carbon emissions. The outbreak of the Coronavirus has caused plane tickets to decrease in price drastically all over the world. Airline stocks have also been decreasing rapidly since last Thursday alone causing many airlines canceling flights and limiting the number of passengers on the plane. Another big Carbon emitting industry suffering now is the oil industry. Oil prices have been cut in half and so have the stocks. Without the demand for oil, oil drilling companies have not been able to pay off loans from banks which could lead to the reduction of oil drilling.

Easy way to make a difference

One of the easiest ways to reduce your carbon footprint is to change your diet. One of the best diets would be non-meat eating diets such as pescetarian, vegeterian or vegan. Another way to change your diet in a way that would affect climate change in a positive matter is to eat less, perhaps by a fasting diet. In one of these fasting diets you would eat in a certain period of time, let's say 8 hours, and then not ingest a single thing for 16 hours, and then repeat the process every day.

lululm   2019-10-21 19:52:50

I agree that changing your diet is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint but, I don't think it's the easiest way. It is hard for some people to completely cut certain things out of their diet like meat and sugar. I also think it would be hard to get everyone or most people to fast and even become a vegetarian or pescetarian.

One of the best ways to reduce your carbon footprint is going vegetarian. Its filled with plenty of nutrients and protein compared to the meat products provided. The food that is grown in the world isn't being eaten by humans. In fact, 70% of the grain grown in the US feeds livestock, and, globally,83% of farmland is set aside to raise animals.Things like deforestation, overfishing and pollution caused by meat and fish industries limits the overall capacity of the Earth to produce food. This is telling us how much of our products are prevented from being grown.

Climate Change Documentary

In my ecology class we watched an amazing film about how people don't know whats happening behind the scenes on how at least half of the world's species are going extinct at a rapid rates. The movie was called "Racing Extinction" directed by Louie Psihoyos. Our whole class really enjoyed and learned a lot from this film, I personally have a different perspective on climate change now and my eyes have been open to what is really happening around the world. I would really recommend all of you to watch this film because it is very well done and gives you a great view on, not only what is happening to our oceans and planet, but what YOU can do to help!

Pollution

In Shanghai the pollution has dropped in the last month. Do you think coronavirus helps against climate change?

Norx87   2020-03-05 02:44:20

Of course. A lot of commercial products are made in china and all the flights from china are canceled.

Carla020108   2020-03-05 02:46:16

I think that in Shanghai the pollution has dropped because everybody is staying in there house because of the coronavirus. Coronavirus is good and bad at the same time!?

Soso27   2020-03-05 02:46:54

Yes the coronavirus is dropping the pollution by stopping the usines in china people stay more at home and are more careful.
It is sad because we need a huge problem to stop the pollution.

Boutchou du dimanche   2020-03-05 02:56:15

Hi
I think that the coronavirus is only helping because since it exist, the planes and car consummation is low but still it is killing a lot of good people and we don not use the same amount of public transportation

Zelda12   2020-03-05 07:30:00

The coronavirus is making some usines work even harder ( mask usines, gel usines ) so its actually not helping that much.

Carla020108   2020-03-12 02:36:40

I agree that it is making mask and gel factories work harder but they stopped a lot of factories that made a lot of pollution and gel and mask factories is nothing compared to that...

Climate Change- Is the climate really changing?

Yes, the climate change in the world is really changing. On the official website for NASA, they have posted pictures of land around cities, mountains, valleys, rivers, and farmland from before and after. These pictures are absolutely mind boggling. These images have shown a major change in the landscape due to the flooding in places where there shouldn't   be flooding, and major drought problems in places that are normally wet. This has happened over the years because of the extra amounts co2 we humans are releasing into the air through vehicles such as boats, ships, planes, cars, and also even factories.  Things we do on an everyday basis destroy our environment, yet we don't even notice it. So yes, the world's climate and landscapes are changing due to the increase of atomspheric greenhouse gases (co2).

Climate Change - Is the World's Climate Actually Changing?

The answer is yes. The world is changing, and the effects are visible. On NASA's official website, there are before and after pictures of farmland, rivers, valleys, mountains, and even the land around cites. These pictures are shocking. They show a drastic change in the landscape due to flooding in places where there shouldn't be flooding, and extreme droughts in usually wet climates. It is all because of the extra co2 us humans are releasing into the air via cars, planes, ships, factories, and many things we do in our day to day life, yet we don't even notice it. So, to answer the question, yes the world's climate and landscapes are changing due to the increase of atmospheric greenhouse gases.

Home Grown Plants

Home grown and or local plants are better then buying plants from other places because if you grow it at home you know where it’s coming from and what was used to grow it. When you get it from other places they can lie about things they used to grow it. This is why local and or home grown plants are better.

Changing transportation methods

Although cars help get from place quickly and easily, they produce a lot of CO2 that is affecting the atmosphere in a negative way. We should try riding bikes or walking to closer places and taking a bus or train with out people would definitely cut out the need for car usage individually.

kaitybird03   2018-11-28 15:59:00

I think this is a good idea, but what if people instead used hybrid or electric cars? We can still get to where we need with the same transportation while emitting less CO2.

aihpos   2018-11-28 23:14:33

Oh yeah, those cars would be an exclusion because they don't contribute to Co2 production.

nickola02   2018-11-28 23:37:49

That's not totally right, because they might not produce any CO2 in a direct way, but if the energy they use comes from a fossile fuel, we still produce CO2.
For hydrogen cars is the same, because the way we get the hydrogen consume energy as well.

aident   2019-04-08 10:27:54

I agree that walking, biking and traveling in methods that don't create CO2 emissions is a great way to try and lower the increasing CO2 present in the atmosphere causing global warming but ultimately it will be hard to stop emissions from transportation industries completely. We can develop electric cars and other alternative sources to energy to power cars including solar which is great but how can we stop an industry based on the consumption of fossil fuels that is worth 4.64 trillion dollars as estimated by the sciencealert website listed below? Ultimately nations are taking steps to promote electric cars such as Great Britain who pays buyers to get electric cars giving them discounts but they are unwilling to destroy an industry worth so much. Some nations though conversely are trying to roll back restrictions to the industry to make more of a profit, namely the USA under Trump. Many reforms are due to come to this industry and many predict that when it falls and climate change goals are reached it will cause a dramatic stock market crash and economic downturn becau se of its worth and there are 1500 gas related stocks in the US. The best actions I guess we can take now is what @Sophia summarised above, to engage in methods of travel that will reduce your personal carbon footprint like electric cars, walking, biking public transportation, etc.

ameliasbod7za   2019-04-08 11:12:13

Coming from a family that tries to decrease carbon emissions, I don't understand why electricity is so good for the environment. Fossil fuel power plants burn carbon fuels such coal, oil or gas to generate steam that drives large turbines that produce electricity, so are electric/hybrid vehicles actually good for the environment when we are just using fossil fuels and gases anyway.

chrissyisola   2019-04-08 15:37:31

I agree because there are so many ways to decrease the use of cars and other modes of transportation that involve carbon emissions. People can take a bus, carpool, or even better, bike/walk. I feel as though people could easily find healthier ways of transportation, yet still do nothing about it. I think that if people knew the real effects we are having on the earth, they would think differently and help try to save the earth.

a pretty good sustainable city

First: No fossil fuels. Cars MUST be electric. Solar, wind, and water power will be maximized. More research will be done constantly to increase the efficiency of these fuel sources, as they are obviously not the most powerful. Bikes and other human-powered vehicles are encouraged. More plants will be planted. This sounds...cheesy, I know, but plants really can make a significant difference in CO2.

Obviously, A LOT of money, probably from the government, would be needed to carry this out. Many people will not want to change away from fossil fuels, as they are making money from them.

aihpos   2018-11-28 15:50:49

This sounds really good and I think it will make a huge difference as well.

johnmcneil   2018-11-28 19:03:25

This sounds highly unrealistic, most likely no one  will  give up car a  for a bike. Take for example some people drive 30 miles to work it would be significantly longer and technology is to advanced for people to resort to bicycles that are slow.

adri5119   2018-11-28 21:39:01

China's Environment crisis

I do agree that China is one of the largest pollution emitters in the world and it will only go up as the population in the cities increase. But I do believe that Chinese's population and government understand that they must do something in order and the situation in their country. China's environmental crisis

China is one of the largest pollution emitters in the world. In the last few decades, more than 100 million people moved from the countryside to the urban centers, of Beijing and Shanghai. Coal is the most used form of fuel for factories and manufacturers. Even though it is a cheap source of fuel, it is notorious dirty, and releases tons of sulfurous smoke into the air, and can damage lungs. This is a documentary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OU1J_U1NSOg. China is one of the biggest energy consumers in the world.

griffing-ny-usa   2018-05-02 10:32:43

the chinese... looks like there polluting a lot

colinsteidtmann   2018-05-02 11:43:45

Developing nations also pollute a lot. India is a developing nation and it's cities are becoming the most polluted cities in the world. New Delhi’s air has been 45 percent more polluted than the air in Beijing for the past few years (pbs.org). The reason for such poor air quality and high co2 levels is, "fossil fuels are still the cheapest, most reliable energy resources available. When a developing country wants to build a functional economic system and end rampant poverty, it turns to fossil fuels" (futureoflife.org). With the growing trends in developing nations wanting to become wealthier and industrialized, I think it's important for developed countries like America and European countries to help out the developing nations with clean energy. Maybe we can set up solar farms in places like India and we can sell them the energy for the same price or maybe cheaper then what they pay for fossil fuels. It wouldn't be very economically beneficial to the country setting up the clean energy for developing nations, but, it is still extremely important if we want to slow down  climate change.

izzzzzytokarz   2018-05-04 11:24:07

China is very polluted and it's a huge problem with a very noticeable impact on daily life. I've lived in China before for many months and the pollution in some areas makes it dangerous to be there, and that doesn't even include all the other things air pollution could cause such as acid rain, which would then reduce the effectiveness of crops and cause famine for areas still dependent on locally grown food. What has proven to work is regulations and goals set to reduce pollution, especially if the country in question (in this case China) is held accountable by other nations to meet their goals.

Climate change

Climate change is real and it is happening and I do believe that is by human-caused but there are always two different sides to this. Some people feel that climate change is happening while others think climate change is not real as we´d like to think.

Surface temperature measurements show a global warming period from about 1910 to 1950, followed by a cooling period until 1975. Since then we have experienced a warming trend. These three periods add up to a surface temperature increase of perhaps one degree Fahrenheit for the entire 20th century.

Scientist believes that from 1960-2000 temperature has increased greatly.
So whether man-made carbon dioxide emission have made the temperature increase over the last century is a huge debate not only for scientist but for politicians as well. Global warming has become a political debate

New Climate Change Prevention Idea

In a new study made by some Harvard Scientists are proposing an idea to release special aerosol particle into the stratosphere that would refract infrared radiation back up into space.  This idea has been proposed before but it was damaging to the ozone but with this new particle it would actually help rebuild the ozone. This particle could be applied by flying planes along the equator continuously for one year and release this particle high up in the stratosphere.

protean   2018-03-28 06:43:14

Interesting geoengineering video with some depth.  Includes some history about aerosols - not an entirely new idea.
<p>https://www.technologyreview.com/video/ … eering/<p>

hodin   2018-04-08 22:29:41

One really big problem with this strategy is that is does nothing about the CO2 itself/.  So, for example, Ocean Acidification would be just as bad.  And it could be worse: people might just assume it's OK to emit CO2 because we can simply block warming with aerosols.  In other words, people may assume it's not necessary to reduce emissions anymore!

Alternatives (Resources & Energy)

We as a society are trying to reduce climate change with renewable energy and sustainable resources. With our technological advancements today, we can have that power. We already have some green energies such as wind power, solar power, and wave energy. But not all countries have this choice of renewable energy as it is too expensive for them to sustain. Unsustainable energy such as coal is cheaper for people to use. Some resources such as food, have few alternatives. Lamakera in Indonesia, hunt

Impacts of Global Warming

Our Earth is getting hotter and hotter every day due to our greenhouse gas emissions. Due to us releasing more CO2 and other greenhouse gases into our atmosphere, the Earth is heating up. It is causing ice to melt around the poles and the sea level is rising up. Slowly, the sea level will rise to an extent where it will start to flood continents. By lowering our CO2 emissions, we can slow down the process of global warming and the climate change happening to our Earth. If we increase our CO2 emissions, we harm the ozone layer that protects us and helps all life survive.

grantc28   2016-04-21 19:29:46

This is true, and although there are many ways to achieve this goal is to make garbage trucks and taxis electric cars. This way the people don't have to change their lifestyle like taking shorter showers, and at the same it will cut back CO2 emissions immensely.

katrinap   2016-09-29 14:11:41

According to ncse.com, global warming has been going on for over 150 years, and it is constantly accelerating today. Most of our everyday choices contribute to the increase of carbon dioxide emissions. One way to help lower your everyday CO2, is to drive less. You might wonder how to get to school. If you live close enough, walking or biking are good options that also keeps you physically healthy. Other options include taking the bus and carpooling, which means you can also start the day chatting with your friends.
Another way to help slow global warming by transportation is, if you're going on a road trip or just going out with friends, you want to have your car on as little as possible, staying out of traffic not only puts you in a good mood, but also means you have the gas on less and there will be less pollution.

We will see an increased amount of natural disasters, a higher sea level, and temperatures higher than ever. There will also be increased issues in our health due to air quality from our increased amounts of CO2 in the atmosphere. Many of our species will have become extinct from issues including deforestation and ocean acidification. This could result in a collapse of the food chain and limited resources for humans to consume.
We can limit our carbon footprint by simple everyday changes including: turning the lights off when you leave a room, biking/walking instead of driving, turning the water off when you are not using it, and eating locally as much as possible.

Juliesabrinab   2017-05-01 19:20:57

I agree that Global Warming impacts everyone and we all have to come together to put a stop to global warming continuing. CO2 emissions is a large reason why global warming is raising so rapid to stop it we all can make small changes like think of better ways for transportation. People can start to use public transportation, bike, run, or switch over to eco friendly cars. We can also try to not fly as much since that was a main reason why people carbon footprint was so high and above average. We need to also be mindful of not over using energy especially at home. All these little changes can help save our future for Earth.

alexaarmendariz   2017-10-09 18:28:04

I agree with you. Global Warming is a very big issue that impacts all living things on Earth. A good way to decrease your carbon footprint is carpooling. Carpooling decreases the amount of carbon dioxide that is released into the air. Carbon dioxide is a primary greenhouse gas that is constantly contributing to Global Warming. I have been carpooling since elementary school and I see a major difference in my carbon footprint.

Artificial Trees as a Solution to Climate Change

Nasa's article https://climate.nasa.gov/evidence/ provides evidence that atmospheric CO2 has increased since the Industrial Revolution at 400 parts per million for the first time in human history. According to this article, http://www.earth.columbia.edu/articles/view/2523 Klaus Lackner, a physicist at  Arizona State University declares that "it is impossible to stop people from using fossil fuels, so we have to develop technologies which allow us to use them without creating environmental havoc to the planet." Lackner is currently working on carbon capture and sequestration strategies in attempt to reduce the atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations. He and his team are developing a device called an "air extractor," modeled after the leaf of a tree, which would pull CO2 out of the air in a process called engineered chemical sinkage. [XIMG_2104b crop](//muut.com/u/footprint/s1/:footprint:22RS:ximg_2104bcrop.jpg.jpg) (image from https://www.pri.org/stories/2015-08-30/ … s-think-so ) These devices would be arranged to mimic the shape of a pine tree and stand passively  in the wind and absorb CO2 as the air blows over them. Lackner hopes to have a full scale version of the system, one with tree-like structures spaced out like a forest, in 20 or 30 years. He believes that a square mile of artificial trees could absorb as much as ten million times of CO2 per year. I think developments such as Lackner's are essential for rebuilding a healthy planet.

katieisola   2017-10-02 22:52:44

I agree with Lackner and how he said it is impossible for humans to stop using fossil fuels. I think that the development of technology is our best bet because no matter how hard we try, humans won't change their actions in order to protect the environment. This new invention seems really amazing and I would love to read more about it the future to see if it works. I think it would have a very positive effect on the environment and is one of the most efficient ways to help it.

How to End Global Climate Change

According to NASA, there is a two pronged solution to reducing climate change around the world today and it includes both mitigation and adaptation. Mitigation includes decreasing the flow of green house gasses in the atmosphere. The way to do this is by stopping the sources of these gases ,which can be caused by burning fossil fuels (to create electricity or heat), and by magnifying the things that store them, such as oceans, soil, forests, etc. The goal of mitigation is to overall reduce human interference with the "climate system" as a whole.  Adaptation involves adapting to the changes in climate and adjusting to live in it. We must make changes to live more efficiently in this changing climate in the most beneficial way we can. The combination of these two things provides the best solution to climate change.

How to End Climate Change!

Despite what our American government says, CLIMATE CHANGE IS REAL. Because many authoritative political figures refuse to acknowledge the danger of climate change, a revolution is up to us.
According to research done by forbes.com, the writer, Jeff McMahon suggests 9 simple things that Americans can do to reduce the existential climate impact. Eating organic and attempting to cut down on meat and other animal products affect the environment in a positive way. The greenhouse gasses used to create and sustain all animals in order to sell their products cause more than half (51%) of the greenhouse gas emissions (According to WorldWatch Institute).
Another thing to benefit the environment is the purchasing and eating of local and organic foods and items. Non-organic foods have pesticides in them, which are traces of oil manufacturing. Organic foods use no synthetic fertilizer which is not only better for you, but better for the environment. In addition, buying local goods reduce the carbon emissions used to transport them, lessening the footprint.
Also, another s urprising thing that impacts the climate is climate control. Although this may seem like an unimportant aspect, it is the biggest residential and most costly demand. Americans often have air conditioned or heated: cars, workplaces, homes, and other daily locations. Heating and air conditioning may help us in certain dire and drastic temperature changes, but it is unnecessary to keep the air at exactly 70 degrees at all times.
Although these seem like big changes to inflict on your everyday life, try taking them one step at a time. For example, veganism and vegetarianism is a hard thing to do, so it is suggested to try it just one week at a time. Try going only 5-7 days without eating meat, the next week without eating any animal products, and so on.
I know that I am guilty of many of these things too: I'm not a vegan or a vegetarian, I have a heated house (only 2/12 months though), I don't eat all organic and local foods. But, as a group of young people we can join together and agree to try and make serious changes to our diet and other everyday actions, we can end climate change!!

emie14   2017-05-01 18:01:36

I agree, heating and cooling systems are unnecessary in most situations. In cars, homes, and most stores either have heating systems, air conditioning, or both. While having these systems isn't bad because in some situations they are needed. But, they aren't as needed as they are being used. It's much better to put on a sweatshirt than to turn up the heating system. Little changes like this can lead to a big impact!

campbelljor20   2017-05-02 10:15:47

I agree, there is a lot of unnecessary stuff that we do to feel comfortable on earth. In doing so, we do a lot of damage to the animals and environments around us. Things like air conditioning aren't necessarily needed, but people rely on it so much that it would be hard to make everyone stop. Another thing that would be good for the environment but is not very attractive to most people is vegetarianism. It would have major positive affects on the environment and cut down on greenhouse gasses, and yet most people won't give up meat

TrinityCUSABOD2MCW   2017-05-02 10:36:54

I think that one way that we can end end climate change is just by not using more than be need. If we only use what we need and not more than everything would have more of a value. For instance, A "full tub" varies, of course, but 36 gallons is good average amount. For example, people should take a shower instead of a bath should save a good bit of water. These simple decisions will help to stop climate . https://water.usgs.gov/edu/qa-home-percapita.html

jack_parina   2017-05-02 10:40:30

I agree, we as humans seem to always overlook destructive actions until it is too late or on the brink of being too late. I believe that in order for people who are in denial of the fact that climate change is real we need to gather ourselves and as a community, present the non-negotiable facts, research, and statistics about the dangers of the climate change. And with this presentation, we need to suggest ways to combat the climate change. For example, gasoline cars and more electrical cars, more solar panels, and overall more natural energy.

Global warming has been a serious problem, which keeps getting worse and worse each year. Unfortunately this problem has been growing exponentially due to human activities such as using cars and airplanes. Since these inventions are essential, we have to come up with new ways to save our planet before it becomes too hot.

francise20   2017-04-30 21:20:05

I agree that global warming is a major problem, a problem that gets worse and worse each year. As Elizabeth said, we need find a way to at least slow global warming because at this rate the earth is not sustainable. When the earth is heating up it causes many problems, one being it is melting glaciers, which are animal habitats. Also, as the glaciers melt sea levels rise affecting coral as well as other animals. Corals are affected by the rise in sea level because coral grows over thousands of years. The sea is rising faster than the coral can grow. This is a problem because the coral won’t be able to photosynthesis and then the coral will die. If the coral dies then all the animals on the surfaces and the animals that rely on coral as camouflage or as it habitat will also die. Food webs show that every animal is connected, so when one species goes extinct animals connected to it can also go extinct or cause the population to decrease drastically. Coral death affe cts many animals showing that coral is a key stone animal.

Global Warming (Effects and Solutions for them)

The average temperature of the earth has risen 1.5 degrees fahrenheit over the last century. Although not at a seemingly fast rate, even the slightest changes could result in major changes in the earth's weather and climate. These changes will eventually result in long term effects like more heat waves and droughts, stronger hurricanes, and higher sea levels. One of the best things we can do to help prevent this problem is reduce the amount of fossil fuels we release in the air. This can mean investing in solar power, wind power, and other alternative energy sources or just reducing energy use all together. Another helpful way to reduce global warming is to conserve water. Even the slightest things such as cutting your showers short and turning the tap water off while you are brushing your teeth can have big effects. I think the best thing for people to do is set examples for others and spread awareness about global warming. Many people might not be aware about th e effects of using too much water unnecessarily and releasing mass amounts of fossil fuel. Awakening them to these issues can possibly make a difference.

I agree that climate change is widely talked about topic. I think as human we can help change the increase of climate change. Rising sea levels is a rising topic since the temperature of water has gotten warmer. I think we should recycle more because trash really never goes away. We should stop cutting down forest because it taking away animals habitat and making them go extinct. Cutting down forest make a rise in C02 and that is not good for the air.

Is Technology a Want or a Need?

In my opinion I think that technology is a want, but  in some  circumstances its also a need. I feel like in the past 1707- 1935 people have used technology in a intelligent way. Such as the print press, light bulb, and many others. We used it in an intelligent manner because those were new to us and we wanted to use them wisely. Now in our generation with teens and some parents use technology for there own personal needs that isn't  substantial.  Such as social media, and gossips about celebrities. Like do we need to know every five seconds of that one persons life. I feel like our generation has fooled around with the ability of doing things in a faster way. Some people use them wisely some others I guess abuse the power to be able to do everything with the tip of there finger tips.

global warming

One of the greatest environmental problems in our time we are facing is global warming. Global warming is a rise in the surface temperature of the earth that has changed various life forms on the earth. The issues that cause global warming are divided into two categories include "natural" and "human influences" of global warming. The climate has continuously changing for centuries.
Another cause of global warming is greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases are carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide it trap the solar heats rays and prevent it from escaping from the surface of the earth. This has cause the temperature of the earth increase.Overall of this assignment, I have understood that our earth is "sick". We humans need to "heal" the earth. Global Warming have causes many problem for human but we human who make global warming happens. Many people have died because of disease or disaster. It also affects the economics of the country. However, we need to be reduce the global warming by using less gasoline, recycle and human should help to reduce global warming instead of making  the earth temperature increased. Our generation should start taking care of the earth because in the next generation they will suffer if we do not do reduce global warming. Therefore, global warming is a serious issue now.

nicklovesplants   2017-01-27 08:29:45

global warming is serious threat to the environment we must work together to stop all the excessive carbon emissions!!!!!

p_nair   2017-02-01 23:56:46

Humans should take action as soon as possible towards global warming. Since we call ourselves the most intelligent organisms existing in this planet and a most of these problems are caused due to human activities, like taking a car to the grocery store which is 2 minutes away or buying the newest resource available for no good reason. This must stop and we should work individually if not together to help save our home which is planet earth from global warming which is causing climate change. We should also support each and help each other in bringing up new ideas than the stereotype ideas we all say to make a difference. Remember every thought counts.

It's snowing on the beach! What?! (Spain)

Last week there was a terrible rare temporary on the east coast of Spain, but is this the climate change? The climate change is not the lasting presence of heat in the Earth, it's that the Pole is warmer in the last 20 years than throughout the 900 last ones, and consequently, there is a great quantity of abrupt climate changes and they're even more frequent. They can turn the Earth into a very difficult environment, not for life, but for the human well-being. And it would be so easy to stop it with the help of all of us!

Only it is necessary to want.

What do you think?

claralloria06   2017-01-27 12:14:13

Sorry, weather instead of temporary! hahaha Student struggles

jorge99   2017-01-27 12:32:11

Hi Clara! I think so, people must take care of the Earth because we are destroying the planet faster than we believe. The solution, like you are saying, is wanting it. Because I think that we could do it.

claralloria06   2017-01-27 12:37:09

Hi Jorge! A good solution would be to stimulate the moderate consumption and the purchase of ecological local products which don't damage the environment. Also, instead of importing fossil fuels we could be investing in innovation that will allow us to meet our energy needs for more diverse sources and without damaging the environment.

Climate Change dangers and prevention methods

Climate change is bad because we are raising the temperature of the Earth, this causes the Artic Cap/glaciers to melt. Consequently, the oceans rise and there is more flooding, hurricanes, and natural disasters.
We can prevent this by lowering carbon emissions in the industrialized countries.

Stopping Climate Change Before It's Too Late

Climate change is a serious problem that is taking over the world and can have severe consequences if not attended to. First, climate change makes temperatures higher which can disrupt ecosystems and affect all the plants and animals that are a part of that ecosystem. Secondly, the increased temperatures are causing plants to grow in different places. The animals that live in these areas are forced to adapt quickly and scientists predict that by 2050, nearly 1/4 of Earth's species will be on their way to extinction. Next, the climate change is causing oceans and seas to rise. This can be a problem when the water destroys ecosystems that are natural defenses against inland flooding. Finally, the communities living within 50 miles of the coast are put at risk because of rising sea level. The water could displace millions of people living near coasts and on islands barely above sea level. To combat all of these problems, we would need to use forest conservation to lower carbon emissions and fight climate change, research migration routes on how much land is to be covered fo r the animals needing to survive from changing habitats, restore coastal habitats, and restore natural systems in our coasts that help to combat the effects of climate change. What Can We Do to Prevent Climate Change?

Helping the environment is probably not what goes through everyone's head all day long but it should be because the less we care about our environment the more we do things to hurt it without thought. Some things we can do to help climate change is taking public transportation or walking so we can not use as much fossil fuels with all the cars everywhere that cause pollution.we can also start using way less energy, instead of flipping on a light why not open your curtains and let in natural light so you aren't always wasting energy that isn't necessary I have also started noticing that a lot of people don't recycle as much as they could be. I dont think people understand they are saving the earth so much by doing something as simple as recylcling a plastic water bottle. In an NCSE article they started saying we could start building offices or houses that are specifically designed to conserve more energy.
I find it very interesting we as a species have become so dependant of our cars that even people talking about walking or the thought that they'd need to ride their bike  around town scares them. We need to become way less attached to cars even though they are very helpful for some situations they don't always need to be used. Say it will be a nice day and instead of taking your car three blocks away you just walk or ride your bike and you can so easily help stop the fossil fuels from polluting the earth. There are so many little things that everyone can do to help save the earth from disastrous climate change and disappearing countries.

Climate Change

Climate Change
Today scientists have started studying our climate to see if it is actually changing. They have noticed different behaviors of animals and the amounts of rainfall or non rainfall that has been occurring to come to a final conclusion that our climate is changing and rapidly. Some people who don't contribute to the mass production of smog that inevitably messes up our environment are suffering from abundances of glacier melts and this could lead to whole countries disappearing into the ocean.Looking back at climate changes from many years ago scientists are now starting to see that these fast paced climate changes can cause extinction. Not just the countries but whole species that live within those countries could be gone giving us no way to retrieve it again.
The second that they see animals making changes to their natural routines there should be something to worry about. Animals are adapting to how the earth is changing and not in a good way. These climate changes can hurt the environments that these animals live in. Honestly if animals feel the need to m ake a change in where they are going for migration or where they will stay for winter than that needs to cause more of an alarm to us,They already have instincts telling them where to go and where is safe but we don't. We need to worry more about how we can stop this and look more into it rather than just letting it go over our heads like climate change is nothing.

Climate Change

Climate Change is greatly affecting earth. Us humans are the main cause of it; Fossil Fuels, GreenHouse Gases, and the large amount of CO2 are being released into the planet everyday. I understand that those things are important and power many things. But I believe that if we are polluting the earth we should make up for it but saving water, using less electricity, giving back to the environment, and create new healthier ways to create energy. Humans are killing not only our own homes but the animals and plants that live in it with us.

sammys   2016-09-29 08:28:24

In this website, https://ww2.kqed.org/lowdown/2015/11/30 … resources/ with Bill Nye, Bill says “during the industrial revolution humans started burning large amounts of fossil fuel, now we rely on carbon based fuels. Humans produce about 35 billion tons of carbon dioxide. 55% of that is absorbed by the ocean, land and vegetation, while the rest remains in the atmosphere.” This means we need to do whatever we can to help prevent crazy weather changes in the future. We need to reduce the use of power plants and factories. If we continue down this path, the next generation will have twice the issues to solve.
The https://www3.epa.gov/climatechange/kids/index.html site states, “People are adding extra carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. All the extra carbon dioxide is trapping more heat in the atmosphere, making the earth warming and causing other climate changing too. Giant ice sheets are melting and the ocean is rising. Flowers are blooming earlier and snow is melting sooner and  birds aren't flying as far south for the winter.” This means that if the planet keeps getting warming we are gonna get more floods, storms, drought and heat waves. This could put so many ecosystems in danger.

jihyunki812   2016-09-29 16:04:36

I agree. So the climate change is impacting to our real lives and will become more serious in the future. We need to prepare solutions not to make the problem bigger and more impacting. There are 4 ways for climate changes, reducing emissions, fighting misinformation, stopping deforestation, and preparing for impacts.
First of all, people must significantly reduce the heat-trapping emissions we are putting into the atmosphere. As individuals, people can help by taking action to reduce our personal carbon emissions. But to fully address the threat of global warming, We must demand action from our elected leaders. Secondly, Media pundits, partisan think tanks, and special interest groups raise doubts about the truth of global warming. This barrage of misinformation misleads and confuses the public — and makes it more difficult to implement effective solutions. Thirdly, Tropical deforestation accounts for about 10 percent of the world’s heat-trapping emissions. Reducing tropical deforestation can significantly lower global warming emissions and plays an integral role in a  comprehensive long-term solution to global warming. Lastly, certain consequences of global warming are now inevitable, including sea level rise, more frequent and severe heat waves, and growing wildfire risks. Even as we work to reduce global warming emissions, we must also prepare for this dangerous new reality.

Breathing Earth

cristinag   2016-09-29 14:10:27

The human race is to blame for Global Warming because we are each releasing our carbon footprint and there are many consequences resulting in the carbon being released. One result of the CO2 levels rising is with Earth itself. Because we are all burning so much coal, oil and natural gas the carbon is not able to be released. This means that because of the factories, cars the fuel and gas and our actions from burning down forests carbon is being released into the air, because there is so much of it, it is not able to be released. Because the carbon cannot be released from our atmosphere the temperature is going up as well as the ocean's temperature. Carbon is the major trapping gas because we use it so often says Union of Concerned Scientists. Carbon has accumulated so much over the years that at this rate it would take us a century to get rid of the the carbon build up. Unfortunately even then there would still be about twenty percent of carbon in the atmosphere.
Other than the plant being at risk you and your loved was will be at risk as well. Because of Global Warming  there will be more wildfires, extreme weather events, health complications, heat waves, destructive hurricanes, more coastal flooding, longer seasons, melting ice and our military bases will be at risk. There will be wildfires because the temperature increase will make wildfire season longer and stronger as well as the seasons will be longer. Spring now comes ten days earlier and winter is now shorter. Also, there will be more coastal floodings because all the sea levels are getting higher which could put our military at risk. Another result in climate change that is already being noticeable is the health of our friends and family. Because of all the molecules in the air and more air pollution there will be a longer allergy season and more intense heat waves.

Plants can help stop climate a specific way. Plants are called “carbon sinks” says an article on Independent. Plants could stop global warming because they suck up all the carbon in the atmosphere to grow. The problem is because the temperature has risen tremendously and so many of the plants have died as a result of that. Because many of the plants have died they won't be able to trap the carbon in the atmosphere. Many forests can help with climate change, for example the Amazon Rainforest.
This is another example of climate change being the human race’s fault. I think that if we stop cutting down and burning all the forests then global warming could stop faster. This would help a lot because if we slow down climate change by not destroying our forests the plants will be able to suck up most of the carbon in the atmosphere. Another way we can prevent climate change from getting worse is by not releasing so much carbon into the air. One way we can do this is by not driving as much and walking to our desired destination. Also, we can cut the amount of electricity we use in our houses. One way we can do this is by turning off the lights when we are leaving a room.

Heat waves and wildfires

Intense heat waves have become a more serious dilemma as time goes on. Since the year 2000, the hottest summers on record have happened in progression to each other. Those that live in the poorest nation will suffer the most consequences while having almost no hand in this developing issue. Intense heat waves caused by global warming can cause illnesses such as dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. They may also increase the length and severity of allergy season. Other than physical threats, climate change has also caused an increase in wildfires that are more likely to spread when surrounded by dried out plants. In an article by The Union of Concerned Scientists, the author states that wildfires have “occurred nearly four times more often, burning more than six times the land area, and lasting almost five times as long.” This quote shows that the intensity of climate induced wildfires have begun igniting more and more vigorously.     To reduce our risk of being exposed to raging flames, we could do something as simple as making sure our city and home safety standards are up to par. Decreasing our CO2 emissions will lessen the chances, but compared to factories our pollution is not nearly as great. Reducing the use of fossil fuel by stopping deforestation will play a significant part in this matter. It is said that 10 percent of emissions due to heat trapping are caused by the demolition of forests. By the way science has advanced, we should use our knowledge to predict and prepare for soon to come outbreaks. Industrialization near hazardous areas should be halted and moved elsewhere as to not expose innocent people to perpetual doom.

One way we can do this is by turning off the lights when we are leaving a room.

climate change is affecting our communities and ecosystems

summary: Our world is always changing and so is its climate due to progressive human activity the climate has been getting harsher in many places and many animals have gone extinct.
Over the past 150 years the world has been getting warmer and warmer, this affects not only the weather but also our ecosystems for example distribution of rainfall, storm activity, and the ocean getting warmer.
Another issue is species of animals needing to migrate to different areas to adapt themselves. Them doing so brings diseases to new areas affecting the health of many humans and poisoning farmlands.
solution:We can understand and further study the continuous effects of global warming and how it affects our world, us humans should also make better choices as groups and individuals to keep this climate change under control. Based on the scientific evidence available to us today.
We really need to use scientific strategies to make new and better policies (not only for our countie s but for our communities) to help keep climate change under control.

As a student who lives in California, I am able to see results of global warming that other individuals on this forum may not be subjected to yet. An example is our drought. The California drought so severe that our underground water levels and resources are at a dangerous low. As the water dries up, the temperature too is getting hotter, as in many other parts of the world, because of the heat getting trapped in our atmosphere. In fact, the temperature in the winter of 2013-2014 was the warmest ever recorded at 50.5 degrees, which is 5 degrees warmer than the average in the twentieth century. The temperature rise is also very apparent in the Sierra Nevada Mountains where most of the state’s water comes from, with the lowest ever recorded snow pack in 2015.
The timing of when the snow starts to melt has also shifted. The snow is now melting at an astounding 30 days earlier than it did in the twentieth century. This is resulting in there not being enough water readily available in the warmer summer months. Another problem with our changing climate in California is that  now that temperatures are warmer, it won’t snow as much, meaning much more precipitation will fall as rain. This is an issue because California’s water systems are made to hold snow melt, not excessive amounts of rain. Because of this, water that could be used as drinking or bathing water down the line for many citizens of California would have to be released to ensure that our dams do not overflow.
30-50% of the water in California comes from pumping groundwater. However, we are over pumping and depleting our resources, and fast. The prolonged drought has caused California to not only over pump groundwater, but has also led to taking water from the Central Valley’s Aquifers. A solution to this problem that has been proposed and passed is Sustainable Groundwater Management. This makes it so areas affected by climate change are able to adapt and adjust to the new climate and ensure water reliability for the future. Another proposal that would help with Sustainable Groundwater Management is having a quantitative value of what is “unsustainable.” This is a proposal made by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) and many others. This new and fast changing climate is affecting everyone, and it is in the best interest of the world if we acknowledge it’s existence and try to help.

Changes in weather

Due to global warming there are lots of factors changing. One of the factors is the impact of  climate change. Scientists have been tracking different patterns in climate change and found  4 of them, Earth’s changing temperatures, ice masses, weather events, and oceans. The climate change happens because warming causes more water to evaporate, climate change can alter rainfall patterns, making wet places wetter and dry places drier. This means that climate change can contribute to both increased precipitation and increased drought. Globally, there has been a rise in extreme weather events such as heat waves, drought, and heavy rainfall.
Globally, the areas affected by drought have more than doubled since the 1970s. This sequence shows the effects of a 2012 drought on the Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Wetlands area in central Kansas. Heat waves are the leading cause of weather-related illness and death in the United States. Statistics show a trend towards increased frequency and intensity of heat wave events arou nd the world. Precipitation has increased globally, as has the proportion of precipitation falling in the form of heavy rain events. This graph shows the increase in heavy rainfall events in the United States during the 20th century.

Climate Change Meetings?

Countries meet together to discuss climate change! Countries meet together and they discuss climate change and what those countries can individually do to help make the situation less severe. The countries have met 21 different times, one of these countries is the US. But have  these meetings really done anything?
The 21st meeting was supposed to be the big one, everyone was hoping there would actually be change made. China is the world's biggest polluter, and they are definitely participating in this meeting. The 21st meeting happened at the end of 2015, since that December, have you noticed any difference in rules the government has set to try and limit the effects of climate change?

climate change resources

I think climate change is very important in today's society considering we are in drought, and we have been in the drought for three years. For the past three years we have experienced a ton of empty fields, brown lawns, and dry stream beds. But with a lot of those there is a couple of places in California where water runs freely which makes the effects of the drought really hard to see. After a unprecedented amount of cut backs this year a lot of farmers scramble to find water to keep their crops and animals California also has ordered there junior water right holders to stop pumping water due to the recent drought that California has experienced. Also California has one of the biggest and most complicated water rights systems in the United States. Also Governor brown said “ that if this critical condition continues, the entire water rights system will be up for examination.

Flooding

A commonly debated issue throughout the world is on the topic of climate change. Climate change is an increasingly worsening issue that will have many consequences if we don't take steps to improve it. Countries around the world are becoming more and more prone to danger by things such as rising sea level and floods, America, being one of the world's largest CO2 extruders, is now ranked 34th on the counties at risk for flood exposure. That could mean over three million people at risk. The countries of Asia are more in danger than any other.  In an article written by Gregor Aisch, David Leonhardt, and kevin Quealy, it states that due to climate change,  “About 2.6 percent of the world’s population — about 177 million people — live in areas that will be vulnerable to chronic flooding within the next 100 years.” To read more on this topic, go to http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/24/upsho … abg=1&_r=1
Unfortu nately, we can not deplete the already soaring sea level, but we can prepare for it. There are many possible threats that may occur in case of a flooding. For example, car accidents are a very likely danger due to the fact that it only takes 18 inches of water to lift up an average car, and afterward it is only a matter of time before crashing and turning occurs. Water contamination is another issue, so water purification would be a recommended task. Water inhabitation could lead to mold growth, some of which has the potential of being toxic, therefore checking up on one's home after a flood is encouraged.

Climate problems

Climate change is definitely a human caused problem. When fossil fuels like coal, oil, and other gasses a burned they release CO2 into the air. the layer of Green house is getting thicker due to this causing and the earth to get warmer. Until we can make a change to the way we burn fossil fuels, climate change will alway be a problem.

Energy Harvesting

Would there be a way to attach solar panels to the blades of wind mills? I feel that this could increase the electric output without too much difficulty. This might already exist but I haven't seen it and I see tons of wind mills when I go on road trips. There are a couple problems with this idea however, first off, keeping the solar panels attached to the mills might be difficult due to the wind. Secondly, the way the wind might be blowing might be the opposite direction of the sun, reducing the effectiveness of one of the two methods. Finally, the cost to attach solar panels to all the wind mills would be ridiculous and hard to do. If you started in a specific area and expanded upon that point, the cost saved from the efficiency might surpass the cost to attach and build the solar panels.

PamMiller   2016-04-25 11:43:43

That's a great idea!
Have you researched this to see if it has been done anywhere?

nthom57634   2016-04-25 17:42:12

I think this is a good idea, but in order to insure it's success it would have to be tested extensively. However, if it proves effective, I think that with the versatility that solar panels provide, this idea could be very beneficial. But if it is proven unsuccessful due to the wind and sun direction problems posed, solar panels could also be attached to other energy producing equipment such as dams.

redneckasian   2016-04-21 11:20:27

When you say atmosphere changing, i assume you are talking about global climate change. The rate at which the temperature is changing now is much faster than any other point in the Earth's lifetime. This is due to the emission of greenhouse gases, which trap in infrared radiation and heats the Earth.

lukeionin   2016-04-22 17:34:31

You are completely right; I am going to do my best to think about the future of this planet before I liter or over use things that will cause more and more energy to be used. Maybe the best way for me to help out the environment is to save water by convincing my family to invest in giant buckets that catch and store the water.

Hunger

Hunger is one of the biggest problems that we have around the world at this time.  Everyday children starve because they either can't find food or don't have enough money to buy any.  We need to change that by getting more food out there for the kids.

backbllis   2016-04-21 18:13:02

Feeding the youth is key for a successful future. Looking into charities and organizations that feed the youth is something we should do.

haileyt1010   2016-04-21 18:43:45

I agree with Jack according to the charities and organizations to prevent people from starvation. An organization, such as a food bank, will be helpful in every community especially in an area where homeless people live.

backbllis   2016-04-21 18:46:31

Yes I have worked at food banks they really help the community.
