Extreme Weather

In the Northern Hemisphere in 2017 and 2018 brought several destructive hurricanes to the shores of North America, the Caribbean, and throughout the Pacific rim. Such extreme weather events are predicted to get more common and more severe with increasing climate change.

Several participating classes in the ISCFC were or are in the path of these storms and we hope for the best for them, their families and communities.

We would love to hear from students affected directly and indirectly by extreme weather events, and also any students who have been following the news this summer.

What are your thoughts about the connection between climate change and extreme weather events? Has this hurricane season increased your concern about climate change or not? Do you think that US citizens and residents (and others in the region) will take climate change more seriously now?

I think climate change is part of why there is extreme weather because the warm weather causes the oceans to warm up.  The Hurricanes use warm, moist air to generate the huge amounts of wind and rain.  This Hurricane season has increased my concern about climate change because more and more hurricanes are going to be created due to climate change.  These Hurricanes are going to keep hitting us and doing lots of damage.

I agree with you. With the rise in temperatures, storms can be come more powerful and more frequent.

I agree, the warmer the weather gets the more hurricane threats there are.

elijahgoodman

I agree and think that the warmer weather is because of too much carbon in the atmosphere.

andersm-usa

I agree that climate change has a large impact on extreme weather.

jackzav

I also agree because the rise in the amount of carbon in the atmosphere affects the weather because it reflects the sun rays to the earth which causes ocean temps to rise which cause more frequent and disastrous natural disasters because the water is warmer which is perfect for hurricanes

lyd_the_squyd

Are we the cause of the extreme weather? Because the increase of carbon in the atmosphere is from people burning fossil fuels. What can we do about this?

audreyherlocker

Humans are definitely  the cause of extreme weather and climate change

tappyfishy

The real Question is how to stop and change our effects.

madeleinequinn

We as youths are not the primary cause, but everyone contributes to the problem in small amounts, weather it is driving to school or not recycling.
