Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Reusable bags

nadiaaxels

I think there should be more reusable bags offered in local supermarkets. If they don’t sell it, it will be hard finding one and customers will keep buying plastic bags. What do you think?

AustinCHall97

I personally think there shouldn't even be plastic bags in super markets in the first place. What they should do is sell a bunch of reusable bags in packs instead of just one at a time, this way you can have a bunch of bags to use and for a better price.

Bekah.Braxton

I completely agree that there should be more reusable bags in stores. The problem is, however, that in most places the reusable bags have to be paid for, so why would people pay for bags when there are free ones? I think that, while it may be more costly for the stores, that plastic bags should no longer be used and reusable bags should be used instead. Someone can maybe even come up with a good way to have reusable bags, but make it where the store can save money.

I agree bringing reusable bags to the store is probably one of the easiest ways to cut down on waist.

RobProto

I think maybe instead of selling them, stores should offer a bag free of charge at least once, and then charge more if you use a plastic bag. I think there are stores that hold that policy, but I could be wrong. I know stores like Aldi require you to bring your own bag to put your shopping in, which I think is a fantastic idea.

I agree most definitely! Plastic bags are a huge issue that need to be addressed. I work at a grocery store, and my store doesn't charge for plastic bags and it's rare if people ask for paper bags instead. I think not making plastic an option at all will be the only way people will either use more paper bags, or buy reusable bags.

I agree completely, but like someone already mentioned people prefer free bags over having to pay for reusable ones. A grocery store here in my local town is called Aldis, and they have a policy where you can buy reusable bags to put your groceries in or you can take the bought groceries outside with the cart to put them in your car.

i think reusable bag are smart and they can hold more then the plastic ones and dont rip and then you dont have to spent money on plastic bag

Using reusable bags can make a huge difference. Plastic bags are used once or mabey twice but usually not more than that, then they just end up in the nature and the ocean. In the long term using reusable bags is cheaper, you buy one bag for certain amount and use it a lot rather than buying plastic bags every time you shop.

reusable bags are really a good thing. More places should offer them and they should be more common in stores as well.

I think reusable bags would definitely help in reducing our carbon footprints. According to biologicaldiversity.org, Americans alone use 100 million plastic bags a year. In addition, every year 100,000 marine animals are killed by plastic bags. Reusable bags would help our environment, especially our sea life. Reusable bags do not use plastic and can be used everyday if needed. Also, instead of giving plastic bags stores and shops can give out paper bags which can be reused and recycled after.

I think reusable bags are super helpful in managing down plastic waste, but many reusable bags are also plastic (people also use cloth, etc) if plastic non-reusable or reusable weren't an option in general and just used natural material, it would check down major plastic waste that would probably end up in the ocean or ground.

As previously stated in other replies, reusable bags will obviously help in reducing carbon footprints. However, it is simply not that easy. While some businesses may be corrupt, you will find most people looking to contribute to making the planet greener. Without looking at the facts and simply reflecting on yourself, if you were the boss of a huge international supermarket chain and were looking between reusable bags and plastic ones, which one would you choose? I'm assuming that if you are on a forum looking exclusively at cutting down carbon footprints, you would pick the first choice, but you have to look at the prices. The motivation of price will always surpass the motivation of ethics. If you, the business tycoon, were going to lose 10 million dollars on something not so different, you would try your best to stop that, right? All I am saying is this: of course businesses will try to cut down on waste, but the business and its viability come first.

It is absolutely clear that reusable bags would be the better option for the environment. Not only do reusable bags help contribute to a more healthy environment, but they are more effective in terms of durability and space. Unfortunately, according to Boston University and their sustainability program, more than 1 trillion plastic bags are produced each year, which solidifies plastic's control on our growing world. I agree with you when you say that more reusable options should be offered for customers, but we need a way to make this possible, because as shown above, as of now, plastic completely dominates production over reusable bags. Please, I would love to further this discussion, so if anyone has any ideas on creating easy access to reusable bags for the public, please share what you think below.

I absolutely agree. In my experience people normally want bags to store grocery products at the counter. If workers offer reusable bags at the counter rather than plastic ones that break and rip, people would be able to take the reusable bags and bring them back over and over again to get more groceries when they go to the store. It would also save the environment with less trash product in the world. Life would be more clean and pure. I believe it is a great idea.

This is a picture of trash everywhere. That picture would result into a cleaner one if reusable bags were given out more. That picture I believe would result in something like
