style=\"text-align: left;\">The <strong>3rd KRTC Scientific Retreat<\/strong> at the Mnarani Club on January 20th, 2018 was kicked off with a warm welcome from <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/kenyares\/collaborations\/external-collaborators\/ruth-nduati\/\">Ruth Nduati<\/a> and Peter Cherutich, followed by a KRTC Overview presentation by <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/kenyares\/about\/who-we-are\/current-faculty\/carey-farquhar\/\">Carey Farquhar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some highlights from the event include the <strong>Research Priorities and Future Directions <\/strong>discussions, led by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/kenyares\/about\/who-we-are\/current-faculty\/grace-john-stewart\/\">Grace John-Stewart <\/a>and Nelly Mugo, in which facilitators\u00a0held small and large group discussions to identify key research successes and upcoming important topics of research. These topics included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Basic Science and Research<\/em> \u2013 Walter Jaoko and Julie Overbaugh<\/li>\n<li><em>Cardiovascular Disease and Noncommunicable Diseases<\/em> \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/kenyares\/about\/who-we-are\/current-faculty\/carey-farquhar\/\">Carey Farquhar<\/a> and Tecla Temu<\/li>\n<li><em>Reproductive Health and Family Planning<\/em> \u2013 Nelly Mugo and <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/kenyares\/about\/who-we-are\/current-faculty\/alison-roxby\/\">Alison Roxby<\/a><\/li>\n<li><em>Pediatric HIV and Coinfections<\/em> \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/kenyares\/about\/who-we-are\/current-faculty\/sylvia-lacourse\/\">Sylvia LaCourse<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/kenyares\/collaborations\/external-collaborators\/dalton-wamalwa\/\">Dalton Wamalwa<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another area of interest was the <strong>Education and Training<\/strong> segment, a brief overview of current training opportunities, led by <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/kenyares\/about\/who-we-are\/current-faculty\/carey-farquhar\/\">Carey Farquhar <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/kenyares\/collaborations\/external-collaborators\/john-kinuthia\/\">John Kinuthia<\/a>,\u00a0followed by small group discussions answering the questions: How are we doing? What is working?
