Dataland Research Study Information and Sign-up

Researchers at University of Washington are developing a new programming system "Dataland" for children. The system can help children analyze data and make data visualizations. Ever wanted to create a project that helps you make sense of interesting datasets? Dataland will let you write a computer program to do such things.

More information about Dataland can be found here.

The research team consists of students at University of Washington's Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering, led by assistant professor Dr. Sayamindu Dasgupta.

We are looking for participants to use Dataland in a research study

We are looking for participants (aged 8-17) who can take part in a research study. The research study will consist of workshops where participants will try out the Dataland software. We want to understand how children use Dataland and what difficulties they have when they use the software.

Workshops will be organized at the University of Washington. Members of the research team will facilitate the workshops. There will be 4 workshops in total, with each workshop running for around 3 hours. Participants can attend as many or as few workshops as they want.

Workshop time and location

Workshops will be held from 9:30am to 12:30pm on June 4th and June 5th. Each session is indepdent to others and you can attend as many or as few as you want.

All sessions will be held in-person at the following address. Once you reach this address, there will be signs directing you to the classroom where the workshop will take place.

Who can participate

Anyone aged 8-17 can participate. No prior programming experience is needed. Participation is voluntary and free of cost (participants need to pay for travel or parking costs). In order to participate, participants need to sign an assent form and have parental consent (described in the next section).

If you'd like to participate

If you would like to participate in this study, please following the 3 steps below:

Step 1: Sign the assent and consent forms

You will have to read, agree to, and sign BOTH the Participant Assent AND the Parent Consent forms.

The forms contain information about the research project, as well as what to expect during the research study. Please read them carefully before deciding on participation.

If you and your parent agree with the statements in the forms, please sign them and bring them to the workshop site. You and your parent can also sign it onsite on the workshop day. You will be given a copy of the submitted forms. You may withdraw from the research study at any point without any negative consequences.

The forms can be downloaded from here:

Step 2: Sign-up for one or more sessions

We are also asking parents/guardians of participants to fill out the form below so that we can have an estimate of how many people to expect. We will not share any of the information submitted through this form with anyone outside of our research team.

Step 3: Participate

Show up at the workshop session on your preferred date(s)!

If you have any questions (either as the parent/guardian or the participant) please do not hesitate to reach out to the research team. We (the research team) can be contacted over email at sdg1@uw.edu or you can call us at 206-685-3167. You can also come and ask us questions before the workshop. We will be happy to answer any questions that you might have.
