Viewing Unicode IPA word processing documents

Viewing word processing documents in Windows 2000

Unicode Word files can be viewed correctly in Word 2000. (What about if file contains Arial Unicode MS but it’s not installed on the computer?).

Viewing word processing documents in Mac OS X

Word files with Unicode characters cannot be viewed in Mac OS X, since Word V.x does not support Unicode. However, the TextEdit application, which comes with OS X, can view RTF (Rich Text Format) files with Unicode characters. RTF is a open standard word processing file format that supports Unicode as well as most of the standard formatting options used in word processing documents (bold, italic, tabs, line spacing, alignment, styles, footnotes, headers and footers). RTF files can also be viewed by Word and virtually every other word processor, but only word processors that support Unicode can correctly interpret RTF Unicode characters. TextEdit supports Unicode and much of RTF, but it does not support advanced RTF formatting such as footnotes and styles.
