About the 2024-2025 ACTFL Certificate Series

Starting in Autumn 2024, the UW Language Learning Center will be offering a series of online workshops hosted by ACTFL. One ACTFL workshop will be held each quarter of the main academic year (fall, winter, spring). These workshops are intended to provide UW language instructors with opportunities to learn and practice current applied linguistic methods and pedagogical theory.

All current and incoming UW language instructors are encouraged to attend. This includes part-time faculty, full-time faculty, and TAs.

There will be one ACTFL workshop held each quarter of the main academic year (fall, winter, spring). The workshop will be held over two Saturdays. We plan to offer a second series of 3 workshops for the 2025-2026 year and then repeat the sequence the following two years.

There is no cost to attend, but space is limited to 30 participants and registration before Oct 1st is required.

About the session

What really counts to move along the proficiency continuum (from Novice, to Intermediate, and towards the Advanced level of proficiency)? What strategies are effective for developing proficiency using each Mode of Communication? Through the lens of the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements, unpack the elements of proficiency and what they mean for planning effective tasks. Experience and analyze a variety of examples from one sample unit of instruction. Identify one class that you are teaching and use that as a lens through which to apply your learning. Guide your learners to develop the language functions and confidence to move to higher levels of proficiency.
