Project Introduction
This senior project is intended to be an integral part of an educational website targeting a high school student demographic. The website’s primary objective is to peek the interest of students, while providing insight into the world of materials; their composition, structure, properties and applications.
This paper, while providing a brief insight into the world of batteries, represents only one of several areas of interest pertaining to the aforementioned material science website. The goal of this author is to present students with an engaging glimpse into battery science, while providing them with some tools for further exploration. Topics covered herein include fundamental battery technology, battery categorization, commonly used battery systems, selection criteria for application specific battery systems, and emerging/evolving battery technologies.
In light of the fact that battery technology covers 3 broad areas of science, to include materials science, chemistry, and circuits engineering, thus rendering individual introductions beyond the scope of this project, the paper includes an extensive definition section intended to ease the students into the study of batteries. |
