A stent can be considered anything that is used to hold tissue in place, while the tissue itself heals.  They are used very widely in Angioplasty and other heart surgeries.  Although in most cases longevity is not needed, it can be considered very important if the material will cause osteolysis or any other inflammation of the tissue.
