Collaboration between members of the different labs of the center is encouraged by offering  shared,  state-of- the-art equipment along with guidance from highly-trained personnel.

Confocal Microscope

The advances of confocal microscopy allow for the generation of high resolution, quality images of both fixed and living cells. The use of spatial filtering techniques, such as the confocal aperture to eliminate out of focus light, and the use of laser scanning renders   three-dimensional, accurate images.

Seahorse XFe Extracellular Flux Analyzer

The Extracellular Flux Analyzer measures mitochondrial respiration and glycolysis in live cells. The technology uses solid-state sensors to simultaneously measure both oxygen consumption rate and extracellular acidification rate in a 24 well plate. All platforms support injection of up to 4 unique compounds per well.

Fluorescent Microscope

The QuantaMaster800 is a high-speed multi-wavelength fluorescence system and has capability to switch excitation wavelengths at a speed of a millisecond, maximize dynamic range of fluorescence probes, determine ideal wavelengths for the fluorescence probes, acquire highest quality results in challenging multiple-probe experiments, measure fast transients (up to 250 ratios per second), and perform ion intracellular measurements

Perfusion System

The custom-built Langendorff isolated heart perfusion system is primarily used for functional assessment and 13C isotopic labeling studies.  Hearts may be paced with the aid of a Grass S48 Stimulator.  The system can be adapted to administer compounds in order to directly assess their effects on cardiac function and/or substrate metabolism.
