Please contact <a href=\"mailto:maais@uw.edu\">maais@uw.edu<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sdb.admin.uw.edu\/timeschd\/uwnetid\/sln.asp?QTRYR=WIN+2020&amp;SLN=21886\">JSIS 539 \u2013 U.S. Foreign Policy &amp; International Engagement<br \/>\n<\/a>Tue\/Thur 3:30-5:20p<br \/>\n5 credits<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/maais\/people\/philip-wall\/\">Philip Wall<\/a><\/p>\n<p>U.S. foreign policy is the result of lengthy political debates, taking place on many levels within and without the U.S. Government, over what does or does not best serve the \u201cnational interest.\u201d\u00a0 Often, the very definition of what constitutes the \u201cnational interest\u201d is at the center of these debates.\u00a0 This course, taught by a former Senior Foreign Service Officer, takes a practitioner\u2019s approach in introducing the apparatus of American foreign policy and in examining key foreign policy debates over the past 40 years that have shaped the policies of today.\u00a0 The focus will be on the people who have driven this process and the institutions that they have shaped and served.\u00a0 Through classroom discussions, briefings, and policy memos addressed to decision-makers, students will hone their skills in presenting coherent, persuasive policy arguments.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Winter 2020 course, JSIS 539 \u2013 U.S. Foreign Policy &amp; International Engagement, has space available.
