Our caucus staff is a team of forward-thinking administrative, policy, and communications staff dedicated to putting people first. Policy analysts provide analysis, advice, and bill development assistance in their respective policy areas to all Democratic Senators and their office staff. Communications specialists manage media requests and assist in any and all areas of communications to individual Democratic Senators and their offices. The Senate Democratic Caucus invites graduate students to apply for the Summer Policy Intern position. The caucus is looking for individuals who are interested in exploring impactful policy work that puts people first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will engage in meaningful work alongside caucus policy staff to aid with legislative research and policy development, while also having the chance to gain professional development skills and hands on learning experiences in a legislative environment. You will also have the chance to network and build lasting connections with other members of the legislative community. Your work will encompass all policy areas, including law &amp; justice, transportation, elections, state operations, environment, energy, technology, natural resources, land use, education, employment, health, human services, and housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The caucus&#8217; Summer Policy Intern program itself is 8 weeks long, with flexibility to schedule the internship to occur from June through September. C<strong>ompensation is provided at a rate of $3,531 per month for 35 hours per week<\/strong>. There is flexibility to do part time work and extend the duration of the internship. There is also flexibility to complete some of the internship while working remotely within the State of Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Intern Responsibilities<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7 Conduct legislative policy research and summarize policy issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7 Attend legislative meetings, possible committee hearings, and other events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7 Contribute to drafting letters, talking points, and white papers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7 Contribute to legislation development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7 Collaborate with legislative staff and other summer interns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Qualifications<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7 Current enrollment as a student at a graduate school in the State of Washington. All majors and fields of study are welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Critical Skills &amp; Abilities<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7 Analytical and research skills, especially in prioritizing and concisely summarizing complex information in writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7 Willingness to practice critical thinking, collaborate, and engage with new perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7 Professional work ethic and independent time management skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7 Commitment to following all legislative ethics laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7 Interest in learning about the legislative process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Necessary Application Materials<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7 Current resume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7 Cover letter explaining why you would want to serve as a caucus Summer Policy Intern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7 Writing sample of any length or format that demonstrates writing proficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7 Preferred start date and end date for the internship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7 Two letters of recommendation: one academic and one professional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Selection Timeline<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7 Applicants have until May 3, 2024, to submit their applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7 Applicants will be contacted by May 10, 2024, to confirm an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7 Ideally, applicants will be notified of final decisions by May 30, 2024.
