{"id":2463,"date":"2012-09-12T12:43:26","date_gmt":"2012-09-12T20:43:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/mswnews\/?p=2463"},"modified":"2013-02-05T16:45:05","modified_gmt":"2013-02-06T00:45:05","slug":"lgbtq-questioning-support-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/mswnews\/2012\/09\/lgbtq-questioning-support-group\/","title":{"rendered":"LGBTQ &#038; Questioning Support Group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The purpose of this group is to provide a safe, supportive, and affirming<br \/>\nenvironment where individuals can explore thoughts and feelings around sexual<br \/>\norientation and gender identity.<\/p>\n<p>The group is appropriate for individuals who are anywhere in the lifelong<br \/>\n\u201ccoming-out\u201d process, which includes: people who may be uncertain and are<br \/>\nquestioning their sexual orientation or gender identity, people who may be<br \/>\ncoming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer, and people who<br \/>\nstruggle with \u201cbeing in the closet\u201d at work or school, with friends, and with<br \/>\ntheir families.\u00a0 The group is also appropriate for individuals who would<br \/>\nlike to process or talk about some of the issues described below.<\/p>\n<p>Themes and topics that arise in this group may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Understanding and dealing with feelings of physical, emotional, spiritual, and sexual attraction<\/li>\n<li>Issues of gender identity and expression<\/li>\n<li>Examining the impact of stereotypes, social and gender roles and expectations<\/li>\n<li>Considering the consequences of homophobia, heterosexism, discrimination, and oppression<\/li>\n<li>Dealing with issues of vulnerability, guilt and shame<\/li>\n<li>Exploring the question, \u201cWho am I?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Intersections of gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, and culture<\/li>\n<li>Issues around labels, identities, authenticity, disclosure, belonging, rejection, and community<\/li>\n<li>\u201cComing out\u201d process and stages<\/li>\n<li>Dealing with fear and isolation<\/li>\n<li>Accepting oneself and developing a positive self-image<\/li>\n<li>Coming out to family, friends, classmates and co-workers<\/li>\n<li>Developing allies and a support network<\/li>\n<li>Issues around loss and grief<\/li>\n<li>LGBTQ culture and communities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Location: Hall Health Primary Care Center, Mental Health Clinic, 3rd Floor<\/p>\n<p>Start date:\u00a0 October 4, 2012 (open membership &amp; ongoing)<\/p>\n<p>Time:\u00a0 Thursdays, 1:30-3:00 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Frequency: Weekly, ongoing<\/p>\n<p>Cost: $49\/$64 per session, insurance may cover fees (please check with your insurance provider) $40 No Show Fee without 24 hour notice of cancellation<\/p>\n<p>*Group screening\/orientation is required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you are interested in joining the group, please contact the group leader: Ryli Webster, MSW, LICSW <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>(206-543-5030)\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"mailto:ryliw@uw.edu\">ryliw@uw.edu<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The purpose of this group is to provide a safe, supportive, and affirming environment where individuals can explore thoughts and feelings around sexual orientation and gender identity.
