This fellowship is for University of<br \/>\nWashington MSW students who will be enrolled during the 2012-2013 academic<br \/>\nyear.\u00a0 The fund has been established to<br \/>\nhonor the social work careers of Arthur and Ruth Farber.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>About Arthur and Ruth Farber:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a career starting as a practitioner, supervisor and executive, and culminating in 17 years as a<br \/>\nprofessor at the University of Washington School of Social Work, Arthur was a<br \/>\ncourageous pioneer for social justice and individual empowerment.\u00a0 In addition to his professional areas of<br \/>\ninterest, Arthur Farber&#8217;s personal style embodied a constant expressive joy in<br \/>\nthe exploration of ideas that led him intrinsically toward innovation.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>His colleagues admired his capacity to maintain broad-based intellectual respect and cordial relationships with<br \/>\nthose holding differing opinions.\u00a0 Students found him open and warm, as he encouraged them to explore themselves and their chosen profession with honesty and depth.\u00a0Friends and family delighted in his humor and treasured his capacity for self-examination and thirst for learning. And he was that rare academic &#8211; a philosopher practitioner &#8211; who sought to be a change agent and made a difference.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout Arthur&#8217;s career, Ruth, a<br \/>\nprofessional social work counselor for over 50 years, had been his essential<br \/>\npartner, united in outlook, yet willing to discuss and question each new turn<br \/>\nof his philosophical journey.<\/p>\n<p>The Farber Memorial Fund will offer a biennial award to a<br \/>\nstudent whose research, written work or practicum experience best exemplifies<br \/>\nthe following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Social work theory or practice that<br \/>\ndemonstrates innovation in improving the<br \/>\nhealth and welfare of individuals and communities.<\/li>\n<li>\nExamples of the student&#8217;s personal commitment to and<br \/>\npractice of the above values and practices.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The fellowship consists of a one-time award of approximately<br \/>\n$2000.00 to the selected student.<br \/>\n<strong>To apply for the fellowship<\/strong>,\u00a0complete\u00a0this form: <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/mswnews\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Farber-Fellowship-Announcement-2012-2013.doc\">Farber Fellowship Announcement 2012-2013<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Please submit electronically<br \/>\nthe required materials by February 8, 2013 to Farber Memorial Fund Committee,<br \/>\nc\/o Juanita Ricks, Director of Admissions <a href=\"mailto:swschol@u.washington.edu\">swschol@u.washington.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The School of Social Work\u2019s Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce that applications are being accepted for the Farber Memorial Fellowship\u2019s inaugural offering.
