S\u00e1mi Role in Arctic Affairs: Politics, Research and Activism<\/u><\/strong>

Since the 1970’s the global Indigenous movement, building on the human rights movement, has gained considerable momentum. In 2000, the United Nations founded the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues<\/a> as the central coordinating body for matters related to Indigenous peoples; in 2007, the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was ratified establishing international legal norms. Indigenous peoples are now playing a significant role in influencing international affairs via new transnational networks. The S\u00e1mi are a model for such influence.<\/p>\n

Join us on June 20th<\/strong>\u00a0for this one-day conference.\u00a0Most of the presenters are S\u00e1mi themselves, working with aspects on reclaiming S\u00e1mi identities and the struggle for the S\u00e1mi right to survival and well-being. Scholars and activists will present their work followed by an open discussion with all participants and guests. We will end the day with\u00a0dinner and a\u00a0discussion of future directions for S\u00e1mi studies and collaborations followed by a screening of “S\u00e1mi Blood<\/a>“.<\/p>\n
