Derek Beal

former M.S. student (2016)

Born and raised in Oklahoma, Beal grew up chasing craw-dads, horned toads, and tornadoes. After finishing high school, he spent some time in the Army playing GI Joe before starting and finishing his A.S. degree at Shoreline Community College. He then transferred to the University of Washington, where he recently received a B.S. in Earth and Space Sciences with a focus on Geology.

Beal is conducted a geologic field mapping study in the North Cascades and received an M.S. from UW in 2016. When he's not out mapping in the field or camping and hiking for fun, you'll likely find Beal riding motorcycles around looking for cheap burgers, burritos, and beers. And when the snow shows up, he'll typically be skiing down things that are way too steep, way too fast.
