Gretchen Bennett explores issues related to visual perception and personal and historical memory, in the context of the everyday. In this case, she is working with an image of the famous performance artist and fashion designer Leigh Bowery. As is typical in Bennett’s work, the portrait is filtered though several cultural references — a series of portraits of Bowery made in the 1990s by British painter Lucian Freud, as well as a toy figurine of the Marvel comic superhero Iron Man that Bennett used as a mold to form the sculpture.
