Epilepsy Fellowship Program

The Epilepsy Fellowship program at the University of Washington is a one-year, ACGME-accredited fellowship designed to develop clinical proficiency in epilepsy medicine and related EEG skills.

Program Details

The goals of the fellowship are to acquire clinical proficiency in the medical and surgical management of epilepsy, interpretation of the entire spectrum of EEG studies (outpatient, ambulatory, video-EEG monitoring, ICU monitoring), and additional neurophysiological techniques relevant to epilepsy as electrocorticography and functional mapping by evoked potentials and cortical stimulation. Pursuit of research or other scholarly activity is encouraged and supported.

There are adult and pediatric tracks which are mandated by ACGME to include exposure to the other: namely the adult fellow will spend 10 months (or 44 weeks) at the adult program, and 2 months (or 8 weeks) in the pediatric program; vice versa for the pediatric fellow. Adult training takes place at the Regional Epilepsy Center at Harborview Medical Center, while pediatric training is at Seattle Children’s Hospital, both affiliated with the University of Washington. A 4 week elective period for research or equivalent scholarly activity is offered at the primary site of training.

The fellow works closely with attending faculty in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and EEG laboratory. There will be 2 half-day continuity clinics each week. The fellow will take home call for EEG readings on rotation. A didactic schedule to cover essential topics is spread throughout the year, with weekly teaching and patient management conferences.

Eligibility

A candidate who has already completed or due to complete a one year ACGME Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship is preferred. For this reason, we encourage a candidate still in neurology residency to apply for the Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship at the University of Washington as a first year, before proceeding to the Epilepsy Fellowship in the second year. However exceptional candidates without prior Clinical Neurophysiology experience are considered.

Other standard Fellowship requirements are completion of an ACGME accredited neurology or child neurology residency by start date of the fellowship, and permanent residency or citizenship status in the United States. Canadian citizens enrolled in equivalent accredited Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Neurology or Child Neurology residency programs are also eligible.
