Every year, we host a kick off event to meet you all before the first day of the quarter with fun events and food! Save the date for our\u00a0<strong>A&amp;O Part 3: TRIO New Student Welcome Event on Thursday, 9\/19 at 9:30 AM<\/strong> at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/s6P9jgAo4g4671aZ8\">Intellectual House<\/a><\/strong>. It will be a great chance to meet our other incoming first-year TRIO Scholars and staff. <strong>A&amp;O Part 3 <\/strong>is a<strong> manadatory in-person <\/strong>event and the last component of Advising &amp; Orientation. <\/p>\n<p>If you have any questions about the event, please contact your assigned TRIO Adviser. Our department, then called\u202fthe\u202fOffice of Minority Affairs,\u202fhad just\u202freceived a new grant award from the U.S. Department of Education. The UW\u202fhad won a new opportunity for students from\u202feconomically disadvantaged\u202fbackgrounds, students with disabilities, and students who are the first in their families to\u202fpursue 4-year degrees. Three hundred\u202fstudents from this population\u202fwould now have access to\u202fholistic advising, targeted instruction and tutoring, and innovative co-curricular opportunities to help them thrive and grow through the Husky experience and ultimately earn their\u202fBachelor\u2019s\u202fdegrees. TRIO Student Support Services\u202fhad\u202farrived at\u202fthe UW.<\/p>\n<p>Today, 40 years later, the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity\u202fis pleased to announce\u202fthat\u202fits\u202fTRIO-Student Support Services\u202fprogram\u202fhas\u202fbeen awarded renewal of\u202ftwo grants, supporting both a TRIO-SSS\u202fRegular\u202fand\u202fa\u202fTRIO-SSS\u202fSTEM program. The U.S. Department of Education awards\u202ftotal\u202f$3.86 million over the next five years.\u202f$2.56 million\u202fwill\u202ffund services\u202fsupporting\u202f300 students in the\u202fRegular\u202fprogram,\u202fand\u202f$1.3 million\u202fwill\u202ffund services for\u202f120 students in the\u202fSTEM-focused\u202fprogram.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond\u202fproviding\u202fholistic\u202fadvising and instructional support, TRIO-SSS\u202foffers program participants a welcoming community where they can\u202ffind belonging on a campus where they might easily feel like outsiders. For instance, first year program participants can take the TRIO-SSS orientation\u202fseminars that\u202fhelp students feel included in a\u202fUW\u202fcommunity\u202fwhile they are\u202fjust starting their\u202fcollege\u202fjourney.\u202fIn addition,\u202fUW TRIO-SSS offers\u202fa range of events and\u202fresources that are tailored to program participants\u2019 needs,\u202fincluding\u202ffinancial literacy workshops, internship opportunities,\u202fand a lab class that teaches bench research skills.<\/p>\n<p>Participants also\u202fbuild\u202fsocial connections\u202fand affirm\u202ftheir\u202fidentities\u202fby\u202fsharing cultural knowledge at\u202fprogram sponsored events. Past\u202factivities\u202fhave included\u202fa class on how to make spring rolls\u202fand\u202fa hike up to Rattlesnake Ledge.\u202f UW TRIO-SSS\u202fprogramming\u202fleads\u202fstudents\u202fto\u202fparticipate in an inclusive community where they feel safe and appreciated\u202fat the\u202funiversity.\u202fStudents taking the TRIO-SSS writing seminar for new Huskies, for example, report\u202ffeeling welcomed into a community\u202fwhere they\u202fare accepted and understood.\u202f Expressing this sense of belonging,\u202fZavannah\u202fwrites that TRIO-SSS offers her the opportunity to be \u201csurrounded by people who make me feel included\u201d\u202fand\u202fshe\u202fsays,\u202f\u201cI feel at ease knowing that I can be myself.\u201d\u202f Her classmate, Evy, adds that with TRIO-SSS,\u202f\u201cI don\u2019t feel like I am walking alone.\u202fI feel empowered and that I can do anything regardless of race or ethnicity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the new 5-year cycle begins, the TRIO-SSS tradition\u202fcontinues strong\u202fat the UW,\u202fand like\u202fZavannah, future low-income, first generation students and students with disabilities will be able to say,\u202f\u201cI have people around me who will empower me and support me.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A&amp;O Part 3: TRIO SSS New Student Welcome 2024 For our incoming first-year students, we are excited to welcome you to UW!
