PacTrans to offer Intro to Autonomous Cars Teen and Youth Summer Program

PacTrans is partnering with the University of Washington Continuum College’s Teen & Youth Summer Program and the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Team 18225 High Definition to offer a new summer course, titled “Introduction to Autonomous Cars.” This course is being offered to students of grades six, seven, and eight, and will be offered from July 25 through Aug. 5, 2022. In this course, students will learn important topics related to autonomous vehicles (AVs) and the supporting transportation infrastructure and systems. Students will form teams to build their own AVs using LEGO Education SPIKE Prime Kits.

Transportation is an exciting field relevant to everyone’s life and with many emerging technologies. Automated vehicles are among those technologies that will disrupt the ways people travel and freight delivered. The purpose of this course is to offer the younger generation opportunities to explore the transportation industry with a specific focus on understanding these emerging technologies.

During this course, the students will visit several campus transportation labs to hear from academic researchers, and also participate in guest lectures from industry and agency leaders. Cole Kopca, PacTrans Assistant Director, and Erik Ma are co-instructors of this course.
More details for this course can be found here.
