    Internships at WSDOT

    WSDOT is currently seeking to hire three interns for the agency’s Bridge Preservation and Design Offices.

    These positions provide college students or recent college graduates with working exposure to the field of structural engineering.  Assignments will provide the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the practical application of engineering procedures, concepts and techniques in an on-the-job environment.  The object of these intern positions are to assist the Bridge Office in delivering structural projects. Design activities may include modeling, structural calculations, and plan sheet preparation. Bridge Preservation activities will include assisting Inspectors by processing data relevant to inspection activities. The outcome of these internships will allow WSDOT to deliver project commitments in a timely manner.

    What to Expect
    Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, Bridge Design Interns will:

    • Work independently and as part of a team; is adaptable and flexible to change and changing priorities
    • At the direction of the direct supervisor, develop structural calculations to support design components.
    • Create details of design components that can be drawn in CAD by a detailer.
    • Participate in meetings and other events that pertain to the job duties.
    • Perform other work activities as required.

    Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Bridge Preservation Intern will:

    • Process field data from bridge inspectors using Excel spreadsheets.
    • Review items in inspection reports and provide feedback on compliance with NBI and consistency between notes and codes.
    • Assist in the inspection of existing transportation structures to determine their condition and vulnerability to scour.
    • Assemble inspection documents, and procure lodging and vehicles for extended inspection trips.
    • Requires overnight travel throughout the state for the entire workweek and possible weekend work.
    • May include work at heights above 100′ and in confined spaces.
    • Perform other work activities as required.
