    Alumni Spotlight: Chen Chen

    PacTrans comprises a diverse cohort of people hailing from a variety of places, institutions and backgrounds. Our stories bring us together and give us the opportunity to get to know each other better. We want to take a moment to look back at some of our previous student researchers and see where those alumni are today. 

    Chen Chen graduated from Oregon State University with a PhD in Transportation Engineering in 2021. He is currently a postdoctoral research fellow for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and will very shortly step into a new role as an Assistant Professor of Fire and Emergency Management at Oklahoma State University.  Here are a few words from our conversation Chen:

    PacTrans Partner Institution OSU’s ITE Student Chapter brings Home Hardware

    In early July, Oregon State University’s ITE Student Chapter travelled to Palm Springs to the Western District ITE Annual Meeting. During this meeting, OSU Graduate Student, Eileen Chai received the 2022 Outstanding Graduate Student Award, and their chapter received the Student Chapter Annual Meeting Award. To top it off, the OSU chapter won the Western District Traffic Bowl. The team will be traveling to New Orleans this August to the International meeting and to compete in the National Traffic Bowl.

    PacTrans Director Yinhai Wang led STAR Lab launches spin-off company- AIWaysion

    The PacTrans Smart Transportation Applications and Research Laboratory (STAR Lab) at the University of Washington recently launched a spin-off company – AIWaysion. The company provides Smart Mobility Solutions using Artificial Intelligence (AI), computer vision, and edge computing technologies for safer and more efficient transportation.

    PacTrans to offer Intro to Autonomous Cars Teen and Youth Summer Program

    PacTrans is partnering with the University of Washington Continuum College’s Teen & Youth Summer Program and the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Team 18225 High Definition to offer a new summer course, titled “Introduction to Autonomous Cars.” This course is being offered to students of grades six, seven, and eight, and will be offered from July 25 through Aug. 5, 2022. In this course, students will learn important topics related to autonomous vehicles (AVs) and the supporting transportation infrastructure and systems. Students will form teams to build their own AVs using LEGO Education SPIKE Prime Kits.
