Enhancing Collaboration: Highlights from the PNW Technology Transfer (T2) Peer Exchange

On August 21-22, 2024, PacTrans and the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) hosted a pivotal Tech Transfer (T2) Peer Exchange at the University Tower, University of Washington-Seattle. Among the participants were representatives from various Region 10 local and state agencies including the Idaho Transportation Department, Alaska Department of Transportation, Oregon Department of Transportation, and the Federal Highway Administration.

The primary objective of this meeting was to enhance communication among partners engaged in Tech Transfer initiatives. Participants began by introducing their current T2 projects, highlighting different focus areas. Some organizations emphasized research and implementation plans, while others concentrated on technical training and webinars.

During discussions, several key challenges emerged, including issues with limited website functionalities, barriers to social media access and measurability, and general difficulties in staying updated with ongoing research. These conversations underscored the need for collaborative solutions to address these obstacles and improve the overall effectiveness of Tech Transfer initiatives.

This led the group to explore ways to translate research into practice across the Pacific Northwest through collaboration on a regional T2 event or innovative practices event, such as a showcase. Significant parts of the discussion included: sharing research results in a more systematic fashion and the importance of securing funding, in a timely manner, to facilitate logistics for future events. This proactive approach aims to streamline event organization and maximize stakeholder participation throughout the region.

Overall, the PNW Tech Transfer Peer Exchange provided a crucial platform for transportation agencies in Region 10 to connect and collaborate. By fostering open communication and planning for future events, the participants are paving the way for enhanced practices in transportation research and implementation. Stay tuned for updates as these exciting plans develop and the region advances its commitment to Tech Transfer!
