Historically, this component has been the least developed component of the transportation planning model.<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><b>Mode Choice &#8211; <\/b>analysis allows the modeler to determine what mode of transport will be used, and what modal share results<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><b>Route Assignment &#8211; <\/b>concerns the selection of routes (alternative called paths) between origins and destinations in transportation networks<b><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Once the engineer has complete these steps, they can build an invaluable forecast to guide policy, planning, and infrastructure development surrounding our transportation systems.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As the above definitions suggest, trip distribution, or the creation of origin-destination matrices, has historically been the crux in this process. Researchers have had to rely on surveys, head counts, and smart cards (like the ORCA card) to gather this information. These processes tend to offer incomplete information about how people are transit\u2026until now.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/BTWiFiResearchers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3005 aligncenter\" alt=\"BTWiFiResearchers\" src=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/BTWiFiResearchers.jpg\" width=\"403\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/BTWiFiResearchers.jpg 630w, https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/BTWiFiResearchers-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/BTWiFiResearchers-97x69.jpg 97w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 403px) 100vw, 403px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2016\/signals-bus-riders-smartphones-giving-researchers-new-insights-transit-use\/\" target=\"_blank\">PacTrans researchers have developed an alternative system that uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals from passengers\u2019 mobile phones and devices<\/a>. This method would enable the gathering of data about where transit users enter and exit the system, how many people use a given stop, and even how long they wait to transfer to another bus\/train\/light rail.<\/p>\n<p>Each mobile device has a unique identifier called a Media Access Control (MAC) address.
