{"id":5135,"date":"2018-11-06T08:52:45","date_gmt":"2018-11-06T16:52:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/?p=5135"},"modified":"2018-11-06T08:52:45","modified_gmt":"2018-11-06T16:52:45","slug":"palouse-robosub-club-competes-in-21st-annual-international-robosub-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/palouse-robosub-club-competes-in-21st-annual-international-robosub-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Palouse RoboSub Club competes in 21st Annual International RoboSub Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5136 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/cobalt-robosub-1200p-85ppi-792x528-e1541523146127.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"505\" height=\"337\" \/><\/p>\n<p>PacTrans constituent WSU\u2019s Palouse RoboSub Club travelled to San Diego, CA to compete in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.robonation.org\/competition\/robosub\">21<sup>st<\/sup>Annual International RoboSub Competition<\/a>this past summer.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The RoboNation competition, held this year from July 30-Aug. 5, aims to boost the research and development of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV), which are designed to autonomously navigate through various tasks that reflect current and ongoing research in Autonomous Underwater Systems.<\/p>\n<p>RoboNation invites students to participate in this exciting underwater robotics program every year. 47 teams from around the world participated in this year\u2019s competition, including Gonzaga University\u2019s very own RoboSub team.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s theme was inspired by games of chance found in a casino, requiring the submarines to perform tasks in an underwater casino, complete with roulette tables and slot machines.<\/p>\n<p>Since last year, the <a href=\"http:\/\/robosub.eecs.wsu.edu\/\">WSU team<\/a>has redesigned the stability of their submarine, who they\u2019ve named Cobalt, as well as revamped its artificial intelligence and improved its artificial vision system allowing it to see better underwater.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the team also decided to install hydrophones in order to better orient Cobalt underwater.<\/p>\n<p>Running with the theme, the WSU team incorporated a device designed to drop balls onto a spinning roulette table located several feet underwater.<\/p>\n<p>The WSU competitors were successfully able to complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6jtI8LiWCxc\">pre-qualification challenge<\/a>, which required them to pass through a gate, make a U-turn around a pole, located 10 meters away, and return back to the gate.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the WSU team did not place in finals. They did, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.robonation.org\/node\/493\">earn one of the judges\u2019 awards<\/a>: resource sharing.<\/p>\n<p>WSU\u2019s Palouse RoboSub Club gives motivated students the opportunity to do real-world engineering in robotics and artificial intelligence.
