It was announced early last March that <\/span>Shane Brown<\/span><\/a>, associate professor in the School of Civil and Construction Engineering at PacTrans constituent university OSU, would be stepping into the role of Editor-in-Chief of the <\/span>ASCE <\/span>Journal of Professional Issues in Engineering Education and Practice<\/span><\/i> (JPI)<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The preceding EIC of JIP, Southern Utah University\u2019s Matthew W. Roberts, has assumed the role of <\/span>deputy editor<\/span><\/a>, along with the University of Colorado\u2019s Angela Bielefeldt.<\/span><\/p>\n

Brown graduated from OSU with a B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1995 and returned to earn his Ph.D. ten years later, in 2005. He is a licensed professional engineer with over five years of professional engineering experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Brown\u2019s research centers on engineering education. It is primarily focused on cognition and learning, and looks at student engagement inside the classroom, as well as faculty decision making outside the classroom, with the goal of improving students\u2019 ability to understand complex engineering concepts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Brown\u2019s <\/span>Engineering Cognition Lab<\/span><\/a> conducts research in four key areas: conceptual change, situated cognition, teacher practices and change, and social capital.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Using theories of conceptual change, Brown\u2019s research attempts to figure out why certain concepts are harder to grasp than others, and with theories of situated cognition, he explores how fundamental concepts are used in real-world engineering design.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The JIP discusses issues in a variety of professional areas and includes a wide range of views in regard to engineering education and practice. There is a focus on civil engineering in comparison to varying disciplines and professions, particularly in the obligations and responsibilities of engineers and constructors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The JPI will become known as the <\/span>Journal of Civil Engineering Education<\/span><\/i> come January 2020. There will be even more of an emphasis on civil engineering education, next to the journal\u2019s other topics, which include professional practice issues, ethics, and history and heritage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
