{"id":5665,"date":"2019-07-25T11:52:27","date_gmt":"2019-07-25T19:52:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/?p=5665"},"modified":"2019-07-25T11:52:27","modified_gmt":"2019-07-25T19:52:27","slug":"pactrans-associate-director-david-hurwitz-granted-ite-fellow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/pactrans-associate-director-david-hurwitz-granted-ite-fellow\/","title":{"rendered":"PacTrans Associate Director David Hurwitz granted ITE Fellow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5666 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/PacTrans-Associate-Director-...-e1564084329523.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"505\" height=\"632\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Associate Professor and PacTrans Associate Director at OSU, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cce.oregonstate.edu\/hurwitz\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Hurwitz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, had the honor of being granted a Fellow of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ite.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last winter.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Active members of the ITE that have made meaningful contributions in their field of work and have displayed great leadership within ITE are encouraged to apply to become Fellows. Their eligibility is based off of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ite.org\/membership\/become-a-member\/join-ite\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">following criteria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have been a Member of ITE for at least five years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have 10 years of professional experience.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have attained significant professional stature that may be demonstrated by having a license or certification based on education, examination, and experience, or by comparable evidence of professional status as determined by the Board.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have responsible charge of important transportation engineering or transportation related work, including scientific, educational, and managerial activities, for at least five years.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have demonstrated an active commitment and contribution to the work of ITE and the profession.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of Hurwitz\u2019s research revolves around engineering education, traffic control devices, transportation safety, and human factors relating to transportation. Hurwitz is most interested in user behavior and its influence on surface transportation systems\u2019 design, evaluation, and innovation. One project that Hurwitz led last year that went on to win an <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/pactrans\/osu-outreach-project-recognized-for-enhancing-transportation-safety-awareness\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outreach and Engagement Award for Excellence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hurwitz is also the director of OSU\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cce.oregonstate.edu\/driving-and-bicycling-simulator-facilities\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Driving and Bicycling Simulator Lab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where the data that\u2019s been collected aids in the understanding of how and why current transportation systems function the way they do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, Hurwitz has established a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidhurwitz.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at OSU whose goal is to develop a curriculum and a set of assessment tools that are research-based by advancing practices in engineering education.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hurwitz is incredibly dedicated to his students and offers them interactive experiences in the classroom which are modeled after real-world engineering practices. This way, his students are better prepared once they graduate and enter the workforce.
