Patients who smoked between 10-30 pack years had 1.4-times the odds of hospitalization compared to never smokers, while patients who smoked more than 30 pack-years had 2.3 -times the odds of hospitalization and almost a 2-fold increase in odds of death. Adjusting for comorbidities weakened the association of smoking with adverse outcomes, as the association between cumulative smoking and adverse COVID-19 outcomes is likely mediated in part by comorbidities.
