Of these,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">87,001 (95%<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">CI, 86,578-87,423) were\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">considered\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">excess deaths<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0beyond what would normally be expected during this time period<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a056,246 (65%) of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">these<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0were attributed to COVID-19, suggesting that the number of COVID-19 deaths reported in the first weeks of the pandemic captured only two-thirds of excess deaths.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The 5 states with the most COVID-19 deaths experienced large proportional increases in deaths from non-respiratory underlying causes, including diabetes (96%), heart diseases (89%), Alzheimer disease (64%), and cerebrovascular diseases (35%).\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Woolf et al.
