Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative (SYVPI)

Tuesday, March 10, 2015

Dr. Sarah Walker joined members of the Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative (director: Mariko Lockhart) on a site visit to New Orleans for a violence prevention summit. The trip involved meeting members of the Ceasefire street outreach team as well as other community agencies working on violence prevention efforts in the area. The Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative began in 2009 in response to an increase in the number of youth killed by street violence in 2008. Since then, youth violence has been decreasing in Seattle and surrounding areas. Dr. Walker has a contract with the Seattle to help develop and validate a risk assessment and case management planning tool for the initiative. Asia Bishop (not pictured), a research analyst in the division who will be starting a doctoral program in the fall, is also significantly involved in the project.
