Peripheral Edema
Dependent edema is usually demonstrated in the pretibial area. In slight edema, it may be more visible in the foot.
Pit recovery time- In acute edema ( less than 3 months duration), serum albumin and pit recover time are directly related.
Procedure:
- Press down firmly to the bone and release.
- Time from this point until there is no shadow of pitting as viewed with tangential lighting.

Interpretation:

|---|---|
| Hypoalbuminemia | less than or equal to 40 seconds |
| CHF and increased venous pressure | > 40 seconds |
