CONCEPT: Discovering Fruit...a "YES" Food!

 

BRIEF SUMMARY

Read a book about fruit, exploring the inside and the outside of many different kinds of fruit, and how they grow. Discuss how fruits are "yes" foods, take a look at some real fruits, and taste them!

 

OBJECTIVES

After completing this activity, children will be able to:

  • identify fruit as "yes" foods
  • recognize differences between different types of fruit

 

METHODS

  1. Read the story Fruit, by Gallimard Jeunesse and Pascale de Bourgoing.

    As you're reading the book, discuss the different fruits with the children, with questions such as:

    • What color is it?
    • What shape is it?
    • Does it have seeds?
    • Is it a "yes" food or a "no" food?
  2. Look at some real fruit!
    Show the children the plates of real fruits. Talk about each one with questions such as:
    • What color is the outside?
    • What color is the inside?
    • What does it taste like? Is it sour? sweet?
    • What does it feel like?
    • How does it grow?
    • Does it have seeds?
    • Is it juicy?
    • Have you tried it before?
  3. Distribute the worksheet. Help the children the complete the activity as needed. Discuss the answers.
  4. Sample the different kinds of fruits. Let each child sample each type of fruit. Which one is their favorite?

 

MATERIALS

  • Book: Fruit, by Gallimard Jeunesse and Pascale de Bourgoing. Published by Cartwheel Books, 1989. ISBN: 0-590-45233-9.
  • acrobat reader logo Worksheet
  • Pencil or crayons
  • Variety of real fruits, each on a separate plate. Slice some of each fruit beforehand for the children to sample at the end of the activity.
