Help Provide Emotional Support to People with HIV/AIDS & Other Life Challenging Illnesses

Be of Service to Someone with HIV/AIDS or Another Life Challenging Illness!

Seattle Shanti, a program of Rosehedge/Multifaith Works, connects volunteers with an opportunity to provide emotional support to people in our community challenged by HIV/AIDS, Multiple Sclerosis, recovery/addiction issues, and other life-challenging illnesses. By providing one-to-one non-directive, nonjudgmental, compassionate listening, our volunteers enter into relationship-building experiences which serve to transform the lives of people in our community who are generally isolated and alone.

During our four-day training, volunteers will have the opportunity to gain skills in working with grief & loss, chemical dependency & recovery, mental health issues, and serving stigmatized populations. Volunteers will also have an opportunity to increase their communication and relationship building skills and support empowerment with professional actors who will play the role of our clients.

We are currently accepting applications for our next four-day training, which will occur April 14th & 15th and 21st & 22nd.

A volunteer comments:

“After a couple years’ practice with the Shanti model of heartfelt listening, I’ve come to regard this technique as a radical tool for re-imagining myself and my society. It’s a little like when politicians re-draw the lines separating legislative districts. But Shanti erases boundaries between hearts and enfolds people who are often consigned to marginal territory.”

A client remarked:

“I feel safe and I learned that I can share and trust with others. You may not know this but you really had a big influence on me. You helped me open some doors and thoughts that I pushed down so far that I didn’t know they were even there. Today I am attempting to work with those.”

Consider whether this is the right time in your life to bring your presence and talent to impact the life of another. Consider whether it might be time to explore a volunteer opportunity with Shanti.
